Warner Bros. and Matt Reeves have found their Batman in Twilight star Robert Pattinson.

According to Deadline, Warner Bros. “has approved” Robert Pattinson’s Batman casting. Pattinson was said to be the frontrunner for the role ahead of X-Men star Nicholas Hoult, but the studio put both of them through a rigorous casting process.

Warner Bros. made a decision this week after meeting with both actors and a deal is being worked out so that Robert Pattinson can play Batman in at least three movies. The first one is expected to begin production in early 2020, with Matt Reeves in the director’s chair.

At 33, Robert Pattinson is the second-youngest actor to ever play the Caped Crusader on the big screen, following Christian Bale, who was 31 when his first Batman movie opened in theaters. Pattinson was last seen in the 2018 science-fiction horror film High Life.

Former Bruce Wayne Ben Affleck was originally set to write and direct The Batman. He eventually stepped down and handed the duties to Matt Reeves, who’s been attached to the movie since February 2017. Nearly a year later, Ben Affleck revealed that he had decided to hang up the cape and cowl, allowing Reeves to look for a younger Batman.

Plot details for The Batman project are currently under wraps. It’s said to revolve around a young Bruce Wayne and Matt Reeves has previously confirmed that it will not be directly based on Frank Miller’s Year One comic.

Matt Reeves’ The Batman is one of many projects currently being developed by Warner Bros. and DC. The list also includes a Flash standalone film, Green Lantern CorpsBlack AdamThe Suicide SquadNightwingSupergirlPlastic Man and New Gods.

The Batman is set to open in theaters on June 25, 2021. Stay tuned for the latest news on the project.
