Superhero movies impressed at the box office this year but one more major blockbuster is set to be released and is already on pace to make history. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story could still make box office history with only a few weeks left in the year, much like that of Star Wars: The Force Awakens. When tickets went on sale Monday, many ticketing websites received high volumes of traffics, forcing them to create virtual waiting rooms and at times even crashing.
MovieTickets.com reported that Rogue One is leading the site in presale tickets for 2016. Fandango reported that Monday was it’s highest sales for advance tickets this year and that Rogue One was the second highest in pre-ticketing sales, only behind The Force Awakens.
The first Star Wars anthology film is tracking to open around $130 million but that number could increase due to high demand from fans and repeat viewings. While Rogue One isn’t expected to do Force Awakens numbers, it’s on track to be one of the biggest openings in December.
Before the release, Disney and Lucasfilm are moving full steam ahead with promotion for the film with a special Twitter live stream event taking place on Friday, December 2 at 10 a.m. PST. The event is being put together by Disney, Lucasfilm and People Magazine.
The live stream will feature never-before-seen content and a Q&A with Gareth Edwards, in addition to cast members from Rogue One including, Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk and Riz Ahmed.
Following the foundation of the Galactic Empire, a wayward band of Rebel fighters come together to carry out a desperate mission: to steal the plans for the Death Star before it can be used to enforce the Emperor’s rule.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story arrives in theaters on December 16th and stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, and Jonathan Aris.
