DEBUNKED: John Cena & Joshua Sasse Are Frontrunners For ‘Shazam’

John Cena Shazam

UPDATE: Heroic Holywood Editor-in-Chief and The Wrap Film Reporter Umberto Gonzalez has revealed that this rumor is false. You can check out what he had to say on the matter below.

Original story: WWE Superstar John Cena may be making his debut in the DC Extended Universe as the professional wrestler is the current frontrunner to play Shazam in the Billy Batson-centric film.

According to The Hashtag Show, Cena (who is currently filming the Transformers spinoff Bumblebee) is being eyed for the role now that the project is in pre-production and the casting search for both Billy Batson and the adult superhero he transforms into, Shazam, is underway. In addition, Joshua Sasse (Galavant) is also reportedly up for the part of Shazam.

Plot details on Shazam remain under wraps, however, the New Line Cinema production which will be produced in conjunction with Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment, will not feature Black Adam (Dwayne Johnson) as the villain. The film is being directed by David F. Sandberg (Annabelle: Creation) from a script written by Henry Gayden.

Shazam is a DC Comics character who first debuted in 1939 with the original name of Captain Marvel. Created by C.C. Beck and writer Bill Parker, the character was first published by Fawcett Comics. Shazam himself is the alter-ego of the aforementioned teenage Billy Batson who has the ability to say the word “Shazam,” and transform into an adult superhero with the power of six mythological gods after saying the word.

Stay tuned to Heroic Hollywood for the latest news on Shazam as we learn it.

10 Justice League Members Who Should Join The DCEU Next

Previous1 of 11

Justice League
The Justice League isn’t limited to the six members we’ll see in Zack Snyder’s film later this year. The team has an expansive roster that features dozens of reserve characters ready to help the Justice League save the world on a moment’s notice.

With movies like the Green Lantern Corps and Shazam in the pipelines, it’s clear more heroes will be introduced to the DCEU soon. The Avengers featured a small team and it only grew as more characters were introduced into the Marvel movie universe. The Justice League is gonna need all the help it can get to fight Darkseid and keep the streets safe from lower-tier villains like Deathstroke and Joker.

Did I forget to include your favorite Justice League member? Well let me know in the comments why Fire and Firestorm are better choices.

Hit Next to learn more about ten Justice League members that should be introduced to the DCEU.

No not John cena! He can’t act!

    • Alius Umbra

That’s when I knew that Shazam is gonna be another WB/DC disaster-piece, like Suicide Squad. Will probably wait for it on Blu-Ray.

    • JNAZ

Actually he’s got pretty good comedic timing, check him out on Trainwreck. I can see him doing the “kid in a superhero’s body” bit.

Finally he said doesn’t want thank god

    >>>”Plot details on Shazam remain under wraps, however, the New Line Cinema production which will be produced in conjunction with Warner Bros. and DC Entertainment, will not feature Black Adam (Dwayne Johnson) as the villain”

    What the heII?

When are DC going to learn to stop making bone-headed mistakes like this?

    • profchallenger

Word on the street is that Johnson is going to be playing Black Adam as the adversary of Superman first in Man of Steel 2. Which means the focus can be on Billy and Cap/Shazam and then MoS2 can pick up on that magical word mythology plot device and use it.

      • Brian

Not only that, also could open up the magical world of Justice League Dark.

    • Alius Umbra

Never. WB/DC will NEVER stop shooting themselves in the foot.

Debunked by someone is who is wrong more than he is right. I mean not the most credible person to debunk something

    • Kal

I agree that Umberto obviously hasn’t proven to be the most reputable source, but what credibility does this “Hashtag show” has? I’ve never heard of them before.

  • razorstar90

I’m going to say a big NO to that Sasse guy because every tv show he’s been on has been canceled after 1 season. So that aint happening and that’s probably BS.

Now I could buy WB at least considering Cena. But the other guy, no not a chance.

Finally he said doesn’t want thank god…

you know, I did kind of think it was awful early in the pre-production process for there to be “front runners” in the casting. I was also hearing that the script had been finished, but the scriptwriter was only announced a few weeks ago. And that “synopsis” that was announced sounds incredibly generic and suspiciously like what has been on IMDB for, like, a year or three now.

I would like to get confirmation, though, on whether the hero will be named “Shazam” or “Captain Marvel” in the movie. The announcement certainly made it look like it was going to be “Captain Marvel.” At least then it would maybe stop those folks from saying “Shazam, formerly known as…” NO! There is a superhero named “Shazam” and there are several versions of the superhero named Captain Marvel. They exist in separate universes, and all of them have the alter ego of Billy Batson. GET IT RIGHT, SOMEONE!

  • Martin Winter

Well this is a confirmation it is John Cena. Why? He hasen’t been seen yet? Who? Not Joshua but the frontrunner. Why? “Cause you can’t see me!” – John Cena.
