‘Shazam!’ Producer Confirms Plans For Sequels

Shazam Movie Zachary Levi DCShazam! producer Peter Safran has revealed that there are plans in place for sequels following DC’s upcoming origin film.

Shazam! is setting itself up to be a fun, light installment in the DC Extended Universe. Producer Peter Safran recently discussed the possible sequels to the origin film with Entertainment Weekly. First, Safran mentioned that Shazam could play a large role in the DC franchise going forward.

“I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Shazam play a role in the DCU.”

Not only could he play a larger role in the DC universe as a whole, but Safran went on to reveal that sequels to follow Shazam! are also already being planned:

“We have plans in place for sequels that take into account those realities.”

Marvel has proven that varying tones amongst films in a cinematic universe are a good way to engage fans. This could be a great thing for Shazam! when it hits theaters next summer, with the origin film already charming fans with its fun personality. While fans have yet to see any official footage from the Shazam! movie, a trailer is expected to drop later this week during the Warner Bros. Hall-H panel at San Diego Comic-Con.

Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Grace Fulton, Jack Dylan Grazer, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand and Mark Strong as Doctor Sivana. Here’s the official synopsis:

“We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).”

Shazam! hits theaters on April 5, 2019.
