With new set photos releasing for DC’s Shazam! seemingly every day, fans get their first look at Jack Dylan Grazer’s Freddy Freeman.
With the filming of Shazam! well underway, set photos are being released every day showing off characters such as Shazam (Zachary Levi), Doctor Sivana (Mark Strong) and now Freddy Freeman. Ever since Grazer was cast as the character, fans of the comics have been wondering if he was going to be closer to the New 52 version of the character or the version of the character from before Flashpoint. These set pictures give us a hint that they’re talking at least a small page from the New 52 run of the character.

As the set picture shows, Grazer has a crutch on his left arm, as well as is seemingly walking with a limp. This is a trait solely held by the New 52 version of the character who had a lame leg, forcing him to wear crutches. However, what these set pictures don’t show is what his relation is to Billy (Asher Angel). Though, knowing we have part of Grazer’s character based on New 52 lore, we can take a pretty good guess. In the New 52, Freddy was an adoptive brother of Billy Batson when he was taken in by Mr. Vasquez (Cooper Andrews) and Mrs. Vasquez (Marta Milans).
No matter his relation to Billy, however, Freddy seems to be looking at something in these set pictures. While we can’t say what it is, we can assume it is something extraordinary from Grazer’s expressions. Be that Shazam himself or one of Sivana’s schemes is anyone’s guess.
“We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).”
Directed by David F. Sandberg, Shazam! stars Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Grace Fulton, Jack Dylan Grazer, Cooper Andrews, Marta Milans, Faithe Herman, Ian Chen, Jovan Armand, Ron Cephas Jones and Mark Strong as Doctor Sivana.
Shazam! is scheduled to be released in theaters on April 5, 2019.
10 Things You Didn’t Know About Shazam
Shazam may look like a Superman rip-off, but he’s so much more than that. Created way back in 1939, Captain Marvel (now referred to solely as Shazam) is an incredibly complex character. After a teenager named Billy Batson stumbles upon a Wizard called Shazam, his whole life changes. Granted magical powers, Billy transforms into a superhero but keeps his childish personality whenever he’s fighting evil.
Chosen to serve as a defender of justice for the Wizard, Billy is given a wide range of powers. Whenever Billy yells the wizard’s name, he transforms into the powerful Captain Marvel and rushes off to fight evil. A lot has changed for the character over his 77 year history, but he still has so much more room to grow! With Shazam! hitting theaters next year, the character’s popularity will start to grow and it’s likely he’ll receive a new comic book series soon, so you might as well start learning everything you can about the character now.
