In a stunning move, Warner Brothers Discovery CEO David Zaslav sacked James Gunn and Peter Safran, and made a deal with Dwayne Johnson and Hiram Garcia to run DC Studios!
Gunn was given notice on Friday night. At press time, no reason was given for Gunn’s dismissal but according to Deadline, Zaslav moved immediately and brokered a deal with Johnson’s reps at WME that went into the wee hours of Saturday.
In their new roles, Johnson and Garcia will become the new DC Co-Chairmen and Co-Chief Executive Officer of DC Studios.
As part of the deal, all development on all the 5 TV shows and 5 movies as part of Gunn’s former plans “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters,” have been halted. Geoff Johns is currently in talks to write a sequel to Black Adam. The sequel is currently titled Black Adam 2: When Earth’s Collide!
Johnson will produce the project with Beau Flynn, and also return as Black Adam. Also of note, Henry Cavill will return as Superman in the sequel as was originally planned and teased at the end of Black Adam. Deadline is also reporting that Johnson is eyeing Zack Snyder to direct the project, as his triumphant return to DC.
Cavill’s manager Dany Garcia was also part of all the all night negotiation and gave assurances to Zaslav that Cavill will return, as Zaslav is still hellbent on having Superman be the focus of the brand. As part of the pact, Cavill will get a new deal to play the Man of Steel in future DC Studios projects.
Black Adam vs Superman: When Earths Collide is being fast tracked to enter production in early 2024 and will be released on July 11, 2025, the date originally held for Superman Legacy. Zaslav was worried a script couldn’t be ready in time before an anticipated writer’s strike, but Johns has already wrote out a 25 page page beat sheet/scriptment as part of Johnson’s plans for the Black Adam sequel.
Zaslav with have a town hall with Warner Brothers Discovery staffers on Monday to re-introduce Johnson and call this whole entire thing a sham! April Fools!
