Simon Kinberg Calls ‘Gambit’ A ‘Sexy’ Heist Thriller

While many began to worry about the status of the Channing Tatum starring Gambit, things appear to be getting back on track with the film after losing it’s director. Just the other day we learned that Doug Liman had entered into final negotiations to direct the X-Men spinoff  and now we have some new information from producer Simon Kinberg about what to expect from the solo outting. It sounds like the tone of this one will be, while fitting in the same universe, quite different than Fox’s other mutant projects and making this a heist thriller rather than a straightforward superhero film.

I mean Deadpool obviously has a very different, almost antithetical tone to the mainline X-Men movies. The X-Men movies are dramatic and almost operatic, whereas Deadpool is irreverent and hysterical and sort of a dirty R-rated comedy in many ways. And Gambit will have its own different flavor and tone to it, will be more of like a heist movie and a sexy thriller in a way.

This is probably the smartest route to go with the character being that LaBeau doesn’t really work as a traditional superhero. Prior to the news of Liman breaking, the producer had also expressed his excitement for the project and the director that they had got on board while also revealed that shooting for the film will likely occur next spring. With the project shooting in the spring, I’d say it’s likely we could see a release date shift to 2017 for the project.

We have a director in and I don’t know if I’m allowed to say who it is yet because his deal isn’t done, but it’s somebody we’re excited about, and somebody I adore, and hopefully we can make an announcement soon about that. But we’ve been spending a lot of time together—Channing, [Reid Carolin, Tatum’s producing partner], [screenwriter Joshua Zetumer], the director, and myself—just working on the script, and we hope to start shooting next spring.

With Liman on board to direct, I’ve got a really good feeling about Gambit myself. Hopefully he brings a little of that Bourne Identity flavor to the project. There’s a lot of potential here and I’m definitely looking forward to see what cards the team has up their sleeve. Let us know your thoughts on Kinbergs comments and the project in the section below.
