We’ll be seeing two X-Men properties hit the big screen next year but there’s also quite a number of other projects in Fox’s Mutant Universe currently in the works for both the big and small screen. While speaking with Collider, producer & writer Simon Kinberg provided some brief updates about the status of two of those projects: Josh Boone’s New Mutants and James Mangold’s upcoming sequel to The Wolverine. On the topic of the sequel to The Wolverine, which is currently scheduled to hit theaters in the 2017, Kinberg revealed that they are “pretty close to a script that everyone’s excited about” and “it’s something that Hugh has been excited about for a while.” While he wouldn’t reveal what storyline they’re adapting for the film, he did comment on the subject.
When speaking about Johs Boone’s New Mutants film, Kinberg told the site that they are currently working on the film’s first draft but “the hope is that we’ll shoot it soon.” He then added that “Josh has been game with this and gave us this incredibly elaborate presentation about New Mutants. He’s a huge comic book fan and grew up loving and reading specifically New Mutants, so he came with a whole movie presentation where he laid the film out and it was really cool.”
Fox currently has an untitled Marvel film scheduled for 2017 and I wouldn’t be surprised, based of Kinberg’s comments, if the plan was to schedule New Mutants in that slot. Rumors about Bryan Singer shooting the next X-Men film early 2016 were recently debunked and this would allow him the time to work on another project before returning to the X-Men universe for the next installment post-Apocalypse. Let us know your thoughts on the matter and Kinberg’s comments in the section below.
