Lucasfilm Never Wanted Alden Ehrenreich To Impersonate Harrison Ford In ‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’

Solo Star Wars StoryRon Howard is making it clear that from day one, no one involved with the production of the new Star Wars spin-off wanted to see a new actor do an impression of Harrison Ford while taking on the role of the young Han Solo in Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Recent rumors suggested that an acting coach was specifically brought on board the production to help new Han Solo actor Alden Ehrenreich nail an impression of Harrison Ford, however, in a new interview with Empire Magazine, the film’s director says a Harrison Ford impression was never in the cards:

“It was always clear from the beginning, before I was involved, that it was not going to be an impression of Harrison. No one wanted that. “

Howard went on to discuss the character of Han Solo as well as Ehrenreich’s approach:

“Part of Han Solo’s character is sort of a vibe and a feel and a body language. I think from the minute Alden knew he was doing it, he began thinking about that and working with it.”

The film stars Alden Ehrenreich as the young Han Solo along with Joonas Suotomo as Chewbacca and Donald Glover as the young Lando Calrissian. The cast also includes Thandie Newton, Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Paul Bettany, and Ian Kenny. Here’s the official synopsis:

Board the Millennium Falcon and journey to a galaxy far, far away in Solo: A Star Wars Story, an all-new adventure with the most beloved scoundrel in the galaxy. Through a series of daring escapades deep within a dark and dangerous criminal underworld, Han Solo meets his mighty future copilot Chewbacca and encounters the notorious gambler Lando Calrissian, in a journey that will set the course of one of the Star Wars saga’s most unlikely heroes.

Solo: A Star Wars Story hits theaters on May 25, 2018.

Han Solo is one of the most memorable and iconic characters in the franchise whose origins we have yet to see fleshed out beyond knowing he is a smuggler. There’s a lot of fascinating potential here.

This is a film that seemingly isn’t that important for the franchise, but it easily could be. It could do a lot of things for the Star Wars canon and there is a lot to look forward to in this one. While it’s not inherently the most anticipated film in the franchise there are still a lot of things that will be exciting to see unfold on the big screen.
