Solo: A Star Wars Story screenwriter Jonathan Kasdan has revealed an interesting detail regarding Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover). Kasdan was asked about the fluidity of Lando’s sex appeal within the franchise, to which he replied that Lando is pansexual.
Kasdan further explains in an interview with the Huffington Post, citing both Donald Glover and Billy Dee Williams’ portrayal of the character as evidence:
“I would say yes. There’s a fluidity to Donald and Billy Dee’s [portrayal of Lando’s] sexuality. I mean, I would have loved to have gotten a more explicitly LGBT character into this movie. I think it’s time, certainly, for that, and I love the fluidity ― sort of the spectrum of sexuality that Donald appeals to and that droids are a part of. He doesn’t make any hard and fast rules. I think it’s fun. I don’t know where it will go.”
Although Lando’s pansexuality is not explicitly apparent in the films, Kasdan’s observations regarding the irresistible charisma of Lando provides a unique dynamic within the Star Wars galaxy that is not often explored in the films and/or animated series.
What do you think of Kasdan’s observations? Do you think that this fits well with the character of Lando? Particularly, is this a great fit for Glover’s portrayal of the character? Looks like audiences will find out when the masses finally have the opportunity to watch Solo this Memorial Day weekend.
