‘Solo: A Star Wars Story’ Writer Explains The New Millennium Falcon Design

Solo Star Wars FalconThe trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story provided fans their first look at the early adventures of the titular smuggler and Lando Calrissian, but audiences were also given a glimpse at a slightly different Millenium Falcon than most of us remember from the original trilogy. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, co-writer Jon Kasdan and lead star Alden Ehrenreich explained why the beloved spacecraft was given a fresh look for the upcoming Star Wars standalone film.

With Lando being the owner of the Falcon during the events depicted in Solo, Kasdan noted that the more colorful and comfortable interior was designed to reflect Calrissian’s need to entertain guests:

“Where Han gave it a certain shabby coolness and a dinged up quality that reflected where he was at that point in his life, this Falcon reflects its owner very clearly in its shape and aesthetic and his needs, even if those needs be a little more space to entertain.”

Ehrenreich explained why the Falcon will have a more worn and grim interior design once Han becomes the captain:

“It’s safer in the galaxy to fly something that looks like a piece of junk. People underestimate you — especially if you’re up to no good. Kinda like how you’re more likely to get pulled over if you’re driving a Lamborghini.”

There’s a lot of fascinating potential here.

This is a film that seemingly isn’t that important for the franchise, but it easily could be. It could do a lot of things for the Star Wars canon and there is a lot to look forward to in this one. While it’s not inherently the most anticipated film in the franchise there are still a lot of things that will be exciting to see unfold on the big screen.
