Uh Oh, This Game-Accurate ‘Sonic’ Movie Redesign Is Even Worse Than The Original

Sonic fans wanted a game-accurate design for the blue speedster’s long-awaited live-action debut, but this artist’s rendition of the character may have them thinking twice as it takes Paramount’s initial look and makes it even worse.

Earlier this year, Paramount Pictures debuted the first official trailer for the Sonic the Hedgehog movie, giving fans a first look at the titular character’s live-action design. The production was met with such a fierce backlash from fans that the film’s director, Jeff Fowler, announced the film was being delayed from November of this year to February 2020 in order to for the animators to completely redesign Sonic’s look for the film.

Ben Schwartz, who voices the iconic SEGA character in the Paramount movie, teased that Sonic’s redesign would be much closer to his video game form compared to what we saw in the first trailer. But a new piece of fan art from artist ellejart may have fans rethinking their wishes for a game-accurate adaptation as they prove Sonic’s classic look may not translate over into live-action as well as they thought it could. Check out the artist’s Sonic redesign below.

Sonic the Hedgehog producer Tim Miller believes fans will be pleased with the redesign for Sonic. Jim Carrey, who plays the film’s main villain Dr. Robotnik, recently shared his concerns regarding audiences having so much input on the project while it’s still in production and that he isn’t too sure the choice to redesign Sonic based on the fan backlash is going to work out.

The Sonic the Hedgehog film is set to follow Small-town sheriff Tom Wachowski (played by Westworld star James Marsden) and the titular Hedgehog as they embark on a road trip in a race against time to recover the blue hedgehog’s rings before the evil Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey). Here is the official synopsis:

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG is a live-action adventure comedy based on the global blockbuster video game franchise from Sega that centres on the infamously brash bright blue hedgehog. The film follows the (mis)adventures of Sonic as he navigates the complexities of life on Earth with his newfound – human – best friend Tom Wachowski (James Marsden). Sonic and Tom join forces to try and stop the villainous Dr. Robotnik (Jim Carrey) from capturing Sonic and using his immense powers for world domination.

Directed by Jeff Fowler from a script written by Patrick Casey, Josh Miller, and Oren Uziel, the film features the voice talent of Ben Schwartz as the titular character and stars James Marsden as sheriff Tom Wachowski, Jim Carrey as Dr. Ivo Robotnik, Neal McDonough as US Army Major Bennington, Tika Sumpter as Mrs. Wachowski, Lee Majdoub as Stone, and Frank C. Turner as Crazy Carl. Adam Pally, Natasha Rothwell, Debs Howard, and Elfina Luk also star in undisclosed roles.

Sonic the Hedgehog opens in theaters on February 14, 2020. Stay tuned for the latest news on the movie!
