Venom is set to hit theaters later this year and kick off Sony’s attempt at building a cinematic universe centered around many of Spider-Man’s foes. Though the web-head is currently shared between Sony and Marvel Studios, this doesn’t preclude Sony from taking a shot at establishing its own world, not just with Venom, but other previously announced titles such as Silver and Black, as well as a film centered around Morbius.
Though details are minimal at the moment and there’s no set release date for the Morbius picture, what we do know so far is that the Spider-Man spin-off, currently in pre-production, will be written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, who recently worked on the Netflix reboot of Lost in Space. However, the folks at That Hashtag Show stated that their ‘source’ has confirmed that the film is seeking a male between the ages of 30-37 for the lead role. More than that, the show has found what is believed to be a potential synopsis for the film. Again, it’s worth emphasizing that this is all rumor territory at the moment:
“Horror action story of a scientist who, in trying to find a cure for a rare blood disease, accidentally transformed himself into a living vampire who, though disgusted by his own bloodlust, chooses to prey upon criminals he deems unworthy of life.”
So if true, it’s possible that the film could follow the comic lore of Dr. Michael Morbius who, like Curt Connors, experimented on himself, thus disfiguring him, but giving him supernatural abilities as well. Plus, a comic book film steeped in horror would be a way to blend the superhero genre with another genre, as has been the case with films like Logan and Josh Boone’s upcoming New Mutants film. But what do you think? What do you think about a possible Morbius film? Do you want to see it go in a particular direction? Should Spider-Man appear in it at all? Let us know in the comments below and stay tuned for more information on Morbius.
