SPOILERS: Shawn Levy Talks ‘Stranger Things 2’ Twists

Stranger Things 2 Banner SpoilersWARNING: The following article contains major spoilers for Stranger Things 2. Read at your own risk.

After the lightning in a bottle that was the first season of Stranger Things, there was so much pressure on the showrunners and producers in making sure that the sequel, Stranger Things 2 would live up to the sky-high expectations that fans have.

Thankfully, Stranger Things 2 expands the lore of the series by diving deeper into each of the characters as well as providing bigger insight into the state of Hawkins, Indiana and beyond one year after the events of the first season.

Executive Producer Shawn Levy spoke with Variety for their “Remote Controlled” podcast. Levy went on to praise the Duffer Brothers’ collaboration with the actors of the series following the success of the first season:

“The Duffers have been really good at seeing what the actors are giving them and changing course in order to exploit the specific strengths of our actors.”

One of the secret weapons of Stranger Things 2 was the exploration of new relationships between certain characters who did not share much screentime together in the first season. The highlight of these new relationships is undoubtedly the unlikely friendship between Dustin (Gaten Matarazzo) and Steve (Joe Keery).

Midway through the sequel, we see Steve become somewhat of an older-brother figure to Dustin after he reluctantly joins him and the rest of the party. One of the best scenes of the season involved a discussion between the two regarding romantic interests and interestingly enough, Farrah Fawcett hairspray.

Levy recalled an outline alluding to the dynamic between Dustin and Steve:

“I remember the first time I read an outline that was an illusion to Dustin and Steve talking about hair product, I was like, ‘Well, that’s gold.’”

One of the most fascinating decisions regarding the narrative of Stranger Things 2 was in “Chapter Seven: The Lost Sister”. This special episode served as an aside centered exclusively on Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown) and her journey to meet Kali/Eight (Linnea Berthelsen) – a young woman who was also experimented on with Eleven.

Levy revealed that it is possible for revelations of even more psychokinetic children in later seasons:

“We know that Eight exists, and we know that Eleven is Eleven, so surely there is the real possibility of other numbers.”

Speaking of Eleven, the sequel explores her relationship with Chief Hopper (David Harbour). Hopper looked after Eleven for about a year after the events of the previous season. On their relationship, Levy explained:

“We always knew Hopper and Eleven was going to be a massively powerful pairing. It’s powerful upfront as they forge their bond, and it’s satisfying in the finale episode when we see this new family of a certain kind reconstitute and come back together stronger than ever.”

Stranger Things 2 stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, and Noah Schnapp. In addition to Astin, the series has also added Paul Reiser (Aliens), Brett Gelman (Jobs), Dacre Montgomery (Power Rangers), Danish actress Linnea Berthelsen, and Broadway star Sadie Sink into the mix as well. Here’s the official synopsis:

“It’s 1984 and the citizens of Hawkins, Indiana are still reeling from the horrors of the Demogorgon and the secrets of Hawkins Lab. Will Byers has been rescued from the Upside Down but a bigger, sinister entity still threatens those who survived.”

Stranger Things 2 is now available on Netflix.
