‘Star Trek Beyond’ Star Zoe Saldana Hopes Franchise Will Continue

Despite positive reviews from critics and audiences, Star Trek Beyond received a tepid box office intake, especially compared to the previous two films. The film had a domestic gross of $158 million against a budget of $185 million and while the worldwide gross of $343 million allowed it to make a profit, it was still pale performance compared to Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness‘ respective worldwide totals of $385.7 million and $467.4 million. Despite the underwhelming financial intake for Beyond, franchise star Zoe Saldana expressed her hopes that the film series will continue for a long time.

Saldana, who plays Lieutenant Uhura in the rebooted series, stated hope the box office performance of Beyond will not prevent the release of future sequels.

“I hope there is. I really hope there is. It’d be crazy to limit the longevity of a show that has had a 50-year life and on, to stop because they had a bad box office turnout, so, especially when people were talking about how like amazing this one was, I would love, I would always come back. To get an opportunity to be with all my friends until we’re 56 or 60, I would be so happy (laughs).”

Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot have officially announced Star Trek 4, so Saldana’s wish that the franchise will remain successful enough to continue for years may still come true.

After stopping off at Starbase Yorktown, a remote outpost on the fringes of Federation space, the USS Enterprise, halfway into their five-year mission, is destroyed by a powerful, unstoppable wave of unknown aliens. With the crew stranded on an unknown planet and with no apparent means of rescue, they find themselves fighting against a ruthless enemy with a well-earned hatred of the Federation and everything it stands for. Only a rebellious alien warrior can help them reunite and leave the planet to stop this deadly menace from a possible galactic war.

Star Trek Beyond is now available on Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital HD.
