Star Trek: Discovery lead actress Sonequa Martin-Green has teased that the upcoming Star Trek: Discovery series will be a grittier take on the usually bright and shiny franchise.
CBS revealed earlier today that Martin-Green plays the lead character First Officer Michael Burnham on the new series. Plot details are still under wraps, however, in a recent chat with TV Line, Martin-Green teased that this take on the franchise will be different from what fans have grown to expect:
“This iteration of Star Trek is going to have a different take than the others in the Star Trek canon. It’s going to be bigger, rawer and grittier… and the story’s going to build on itself. It’s going to be a tremendous journey.”
The series also stars Jason Isaacs as the titular ship’s captain, Captain Lorca, James Frain as Spock’s father, Sarek, Doug Jones as a Starfleet Science Officer and a member of a new alien species, and Anthony Rapp as another crew member who’s character is described as an “astrobiologist, fungus expert, and Starfleet Science Officer.
Star Trek: Discovery will debut sometime in the late summer or early fall of 2017. CBS will attempt to expand the subscription base for their $5.99 streaming service with Star Trek: Discovery as the series will only be available for subscribers of the CBS All Access service.
Does this sound like a fresh take on the Star Trek franchise you would be interested in? Will you be signing up for CBS All Access? Or is it a mistake for the network to make the series exclusively available to subscribers of their streaming service? Let us know in the comments below.
