‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Premiere Beams Up Nearly 10 Million Viewers

Entertainment Weekly is reporting that Star Trek: Discovery‘s maiden voyage garnered 9.6 million viewers. CBS expects that a week from now, after viewers who didn’t catch the show live watch it on-demand, that number should inflate to 15 million. While the first two episodes will be the only that are televised through CBS’s main channel, that’s a pretty strong start for the sci-fi series.

Unfortunately, future content for the series won’t be broadcast through CBS, and fans who liked what they saw will have to pay up for CBS All Access, their official streaming service for all of their shows. There’s naturally been a spike in subscriptions to the service following the show’s pilot, but given how many people watched the premiere, one wonders if CBS would have been better off broadcasting the show as it actually airs instead of making it a streaming-only option.

Star Trek: Discovery episodes are set to be released through CBS All Access on a weekly basis for United States viewers, concluding in early 2018 after a short hiatus. The series will go up on Netflix an episode at a time for viewers outside of the United States. The show’s cast includes Sonequa Martin-Green, Terry Serpico, Maulik Pancholy, Sam Vartholomeos, James Frain, Doug Jones, Michelle Yeoh, Anthony Rapp, Chris Obi, Shazad Latif, Mary Chieffo, Jason Isaacs, Mary Wiseman, Rainn Wilson, Kenneth Mitchell, Rekha Sharma, Damon Runyan, Clare McConnell, and Wilson Cruz.

Marvel TV Moon Knight Illuminati The SentryWith news breaking that Damon Lindelof, the co-creator of both Lost and The Leftovers, is in talks to develop a Watchmen show for HBO, Marvel needs a new TV hit. Don’t get me wrong, I know Agents of Shield still has a huge following, but I stopped watching the Netflix shows during the second season of Daredevil. And FX’s Legion was just… okay for me. It’s not that I don’t love Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, but it’s not fair to put lower-tier characters like them in competition with a juggernaut like Watchmen.

HBO was clearly taking notes when Netflix started releasing their shows, so this seems like a great moment for Marvel to take some notes on their competition. If DC is going to churn out a Watchmen series, then Marvel needs to dig deep into their libraries to find stories worthy of being brought to the silver screen.

    Would not know…could not watch the show. CBS allowed the NFL football game to continue airing well past its designated time. Therefore, pushing back everything scheduled after that…it was supposed to start at 8:30pm ET, but “60 minutes” had already started by that point, so therefore by 9:15-9:30pm, “60-minutes” was still on….missed it completely, could not DVR it due to the delayed schedule (messed all that up), cannot DVR it today through my Comcast Cable provider…doesn’t exist.

    So aggravated. CBS is infamous for things like this……..pushing back all their prime-time scheduled shows due to basketball, baseball, football games, etc. So one cannot DVR it at all.

    You need to get your facts straight. Only the first episode was broadcast on CBS free to air. The second episode was behind the CBS paywall. I imagine the audience drop off after episode one will be around 80%. CBS will of course say it’s had millions of signups to CBS All Access just to watch Discovery. It would. You can bet they’ll be no release of audience figures from CBS for this show from now on. It doesn’t want people to know that no one’s either watching it, or paying to watch it.
