Star Trek: Discovery will be the latest entry in the science fiction franchise and with several previous interpretations on film and television, creating a fresh take on the beloved property while delivering on what fans have come to expect from a Trek adventure could be challenging. In an interview with CNET, executive producer Alex Kurtzman discussed how Discovery will capture the spirit of the original series while delivering a new experience for viewers.
Kurtzman explained how the inclusion of Sonequa Martin- Green and Michelle Yeoh as lead characters will offer audiences something they have not seen in the franchise before:
“The story that we have for season one is really interesting and special and I think pays tribute to a lot of what Trek has done and in many ways is actually doing it in a new way. To have Sonequa and Michelle as captains of our ship is really, really exciting and different. I love stories that are based around strong women and we have some very strong women on that show. Having, you know, Sonequa […] she’s a very, very special actress and is bringing a flavor to the character that I feel like I haven’t actually seen in Trek and that’s really, really exciting. Her story is very unique and draws on some really interesting things in Trek lore. I think fans will both, appreciate, and I am certain, it will be a cause of much debate.”
Kurtzman also explained how the new show will maintain franchise continuity while also exploring new territory:
“If you are a fan of Trek you’re gonna see a lot of things that hearkens back to the original series and elements of the original series. I’m not just talking plot, I mean the spirit of what that show was. We are going to be revisiting a couple of things on Discovery that I think people will find familiar. Without spoiling anything, I think we are adhering to a timeline and sticking to the rules, but also I think finding some new areas and avenues of exploration that have only been alluded to, but never fully explored.”
