‘Star Trek’ Actress Nichelle Nichols Diagnosed With Dementia

Star Trek Nichelle Nichols Star Trek actress Nichelle Nichols has been diagnosed with dementia according to documents obtained by TMZ.

Documents filed in the actress’s conservatorship reveal the 85-year old’s doctor, Dr. Meena Makhijani says Nichols has “moderate progressive dementia.” Nichols has been a patient of Makhijani’s for the last 2-3 years. The documents also reveal that Nichols is currently suffering from “a major impairment of her short-term memory and moderate impairment of understanding abstract concepts, sense of time, place and immediate recall.”

Fortunately, Nichols reportedly has no impairment of her long-term memory, communication, or concentration, and is still able to reason logically and plan out her actions according to the site.

Nichols is best known for her iconic role as Uhura on the original 1966 Star Trek series which featured the actress making history with star William Shatner as the two shared the first interracial kiss on television.

Today, the franchise continues to make history as Paramount Pictures and Bad Robot Productions have tapped Jessica Jones director S.J. Clarkson to direct the fourth film in its current Star Trek franchise. She will be the first female director to helm a project in the franchise.

Clarkson will direct Star Trek 4 from a script written by J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay. JJ Abrams and Lindsey Weber are set to produce the project through Bad Robot with Skydance CEO David Ellison and Dana Goldberg serving as executive producers.

After Christopher Nolan wrapped up his Dark Knight trilogy, the character was quickly reintroduced in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and was a key player in Justice League. The Caped Crusader is set to return in his own movie, potentially titled The Batman, with Matt Reeves, the director of Cloverfield and the last two Planet of the Apes movies, behind the camera.

At the moment, nothing is known about the film’s plot or who will appear, but with Batman in the title role odds are other key DC characters will appear. So far, Batman’s corner of the DC Universe hasn’t been explored too much, so there are still a lot of characters who can be introduced on the big screen. Batman’s gonna need some villains to fight, and allies to fight beside, so Matt Reeves needs to search through the back-issues and figure out who he wants to include.
