Rogue One: A Star Wars Story features a wealth of new characters for the galaxy far far away, but Saw Gerrera (played by Forest Whitaker) is one fans are familiar with from the CG animated series, Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
For fans who aren’t as caught up with the animated show, however, the official Twitter account for Star Wars has released a full character card for Gerrera, which provides some of his backstory and role in the upcoming movie. If you want to remain mostly unspoiled, then you might not want to read further.
In the trailers, we’ve seen Gerrera act as a cautionary veteran for Jyn Erso (presumably), but it was only recently that Star Wars confirmed his identity after months of speculation.
“A veteran of the Clone Wars and the rebellion against the Empire, Saw leads Rebel extremists on the ancient world of Jedha. He’s lost much in decades of combat, but occasional flashes of the caring man he once was shine through his calloused exterior. Saw’s ailing health has not withered his resolve to fight.”
Saw being a Rebel leader on Jedha seems to confirm his key role in Erso’s mission, even if he’s not an official member of her strike team. His “calloused exterior” likely refers to his more morally questionable tactics since The Clone Wars, similar to how Jyn Erso is somewhat rebuked for her reckless behavior during the Rebellion.
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story opens in theaters on December 16.
