I can at least speak for Finn when asking “Why does everyone wanna go back to Jakku?!”
After an Everything Geek Podcast interview with Mel Pickup and DJ Mark Pickup, extras in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, that becomes a legitimate question. The Pickups, who played Athgar Heece and a Jakku scavenger respectively, discussed their roles before Mark mentioned that he heard director Colin Trevorrow will be shooting in Abu Dhabi. Jakku was originally shot in Rub al Khali, a desert near Abu Dhabi, so the connection seems pretty clear if true.
Here’s what Mark said in the interview exactly:
“I’ve heard wind that (Episode IX) is starting to be filmed next year, and they are doing a scene back in Abu Dhabi, so as soon as I get back there after Christmas I’m gonna put all of my attention into try to find out which team is going to be on the ground doing it.”

So what does this mean for Rey? Will she be making a hero’s return to her “home planet?” At face value, it’s entirely possible that Rey learns some major news about herself (wonder would that could be) in Star Wars: The Last Jedi which makes her want to go back for more information. It’s hard to speculate with Episode 8 still on the horizon, but that won’t stope anyone from doing so.
Either way, more answers will come to fruition soon enough. In the meantime, what do you think this means for Rey? More importantly, how will Finn take the news of another trip to Jakku? Sound off in the comments!
