Rian Johnson’s Star Wars Episode VIII doesn’t hit theaters until 2017, but Disney and Lucasfilm are already gearing up to cast the female lead for their highly anticipated film.
The Wrap reports that even though the film is still in early casting stages with many up-and-coming actresses scheduled to audition with the director, Olivia Cooke (Me and Earl and the Dying Girl), Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black) and Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin) are among the top contenders for the role. Maslany was actually one of the finalists for Star Wars: Rogue One, but that role eventually went to Felicity Jones.
The three actresses are said to be testing with Star Wars: The Force Awakens star John Boyega by the end of the month. Where does that leave Daisy Ridley’s Rey though? That remains to be seen, since plot details about the film are currently kept under wraps. As of right now, nothing has been officially confirmed yet, but both Ridley and Boyega are expected to return for the sequel.
As previously reported, Benicio Del Toro (Guardians of The Galaxy) is also nearing a deal to play the villain in the movie.
