Star Wars: Episode VIII is the next chapter in the saga that was kicked off by J.J. Abrams, Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Rian Johnson is at the helm and it has been reported that this will be a darker film in tone and emotion. We know that Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), Rey (Daisy Ridley), and Finn (John Boyega) will be returning but details have been scarce. Now, MakingStarWars.net is reporting that one character’s costume will reference that of Star Wars legend in Episode VIII.

Kylo Ren’s outfit will including an addition in Star Wars: Episode VIII, a different cape, more like that of Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back.

According to sources, Kylo Ren is wearing a Darth Vader cape in Star Wars: Episode VIII. The cape is said to be like the one Darth Vader wears in The Empire Strikes Back/Return of the Jedi. However, the cape does not have the same chain clasp. It is not entirely clear if this cape is one Kylo made to resemble that of his grandfather’s or if he actually procured one of Darth Vader’s capes that probably fell into the hands of collectors in the Star Wars galaxy.

It has not yet been confirmed if the cape that Ren will wear was actually that of Darth Vader. After all, we saw him with the deformed helmet of Vader in The Force Awakens.

Starring Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Lupita Nyong’o, Domhnall Gleeson, Anthony Daniels, Gwendoline Christie, Andy Serkis, Laura Dern, Kelly Marie Tran and Benicio del Toro, Star Wars: Episode VIII opens in theaters on December 15, 2017.

Next up in the Star Wars lineup is Gareth Edward’s anthology film, Rogue One. The film stars Felicity Jones, Diego Luna, Riz Ahmed, Ben Mendelsohn, Donnie Yen, Jiang Wen, Forest Whitaker, Mads Mikkelsen, Alan Tudyk, and Jonathan Aris. Fans will soon be able to decide what their thoughts on the film are when Rogue One arrives in theaters on December 16th.

Aren’t costume changes par for the course for merchandised films?

Aside from the chain clasp what really sets Vader’s cape apart from other black capes? It’s a fairly standard black cloth cape.
