Star Wars: The Force Awakens is often criticized for the numerous parallels to the original trilogy – particularly A New Hope. Although the story may borrow heavily from those films, the new characters involved in this sequel trilogy more than make up for what some may consider narrative shortcomings. And with Star Wars: The Last Jedi continuing where we left off, writer/director Rian Johnson will certainly explore our new heroes and villains even further than what J.J. Abrams established.
One of the characters that will be further explored in The Last Jedi is Captain Phasma, portrayed by Game of Throne‘s Gwendoline Christie. Fans were mostly underwhelmed by how the character was used in The Force Awakens, complaining that she had little to do except look cool and be thrown into a trash compactor by her former stormtrooper Finn (John Boyega) and Han Solo (Harrison Ford).
Thankfully, Phasma leaves the trash compactor at some point in The Last Jedi and is surely ready to get some much-needed redemption after being humiliated by Finn. Recently, Christie made an appearance at the Television Critics Association’s press tour to promote Top of the Lake: China Girl. While there, she spoke to Entertainment Weekly, and showered her The Last Jedi director with praise.
“I was just so delighted to be in The Last Jedi, and for that to be directed by Rian Johnson, who is another director I’ve long admired since I watched Brick, actually; I thought that was a really brilliant piece of work. When I met him, these are huge things to me and things I never thought would happen in my career, so when Rian invited me to read the script, have my thoughts and then to come and discuss it with him — as he did all of the cast members — I was really thrilled to have an opportunity of a forum where I could put my ideas forward and have some back and forth about where we felt things were and where we felt they can go. What I can tell you about the next Star Wars film is I think Rian does an exceptional job of going deeper, of going further, and really exploring what these relationships are.”
Similar to The Empire Strikes Back, it sure looks like The Last Jedi is shaping up to be an intimate character drama that digs deep into the core of who these new characters are. We will learn more about Rey (Daisy Ridley) and her destiny with her strong Force powers. We will also learn about where Finn’s path takes him after he deserted the First Order and finds himself working with the Resistance alongside Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) and his new ally Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran). On the Dark Side, Kylo Ren (Adam Driver) is completing his training with Supreme Leader Snoke (Andy Serkis) to become the powerful dark Force user that could echo the legacy of his grandfather.
Either way, it’s great to hear that Christie will be doing more with Phasma this time around. Hopefully, we see her dive deep into the action as well and maybe she can have a face-off against Finn.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi arrives in our galaxy on December 15, 2017.
