‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’: Andy Serkis Discusses Supreme Leader Snoke

Star Wars: The Force Awakens is just one short month away. If you feel so inclined, we will now allow you a moment to do the Happy Dance.

Feels good, doesn’t it?

But with the film so close, fans are still scratching their heads when it comes to a few major characters. Andy Serkis’ Supreme Leader Snoke, for example, is still a complete mystery. While we know he’s the leader of The First Order, not much else about the character has become common knowledge. Fortunately, Serkis was willing to open up a bit about this mysterious figure (though he wouldn’t give away any spoilers.

It was quite an unusual situation. I worked specifically with Domhnall Gleeson and with Adam Driver. My first day was basically standing on a 25-foot podium doing Lord Snoke without the faintest idea what he looked like…or in fact who he was! I was very high up, totally on my own, away from everybody else, but acting with them.

Hmmm, very interesting. Could this scene have been the one pictured above, with Supreme Leader Snoke addressing The First Order regime from an elevated position? Who knows? But the way Serkis describes him, there’s much more to Snoke than just your typical bad guy characteristics. It sounds as if he actually has some depth to him.

He is severely damaged. Although he’s a powerful leader, he comes across as vulnerable. Very scarred and disfigured. We used sort of a ‘Kongolizer’ method of having sound come out of speakers to give a sense of scale and distance for the character. So it was very challenging and scary, in face probably one of my most scary film experiences I’ve ever had.

That’s saying a lot for a guy who has played Gollum, King Kong and Caesar. But it certainly bodes well for his character and for the mystery surrounding him in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which will hit theaters on Dec. 18.
