‘Stranger Things 2’: How Barb’s Death Is Significant To The Story

Barb Stranger Things 2As Stranger Things became a cultural phenomenon, there was one character from the hit series that left a surprising resonance for fans: Barbara “Barb” Holland.

Barb, who was portrayed by Shannon Purser was Nancy Wheeler’s (Natalia Dyer) best friend. Both of them attended a party and unfortunately for Barb, she ended up getting killed by the Demogorgon while Nancy was ignoring her as she was getting cozy with her boyfriend Steve Harrington (Joe Keery).

After Barb went missing, Nancy spends the rest of the first season teaming up with Jonathan Byers (Charlie Heaton) to search for her best friend and his younger brother Will Byers (Noah Schnapp). Although Will was found in the Upside Down alive, Barb was found lifeless.

We only saw a hint of the impact that Barb’s death had on Nancy and the rest of the characters. The fact that her death felt glossed over with the small town of Hawkins, Indiana has become a running joke throughout the Stranger Things fanbase. #JusticeForBarb became a popular hashtag from fans wishing that she is given justice in Stranger Things 2.

Fans who are hoping to see how Barb’s death impacts the narrative of the new season are going to be really happy based off of Natalia Dyer’s comments:

“Especially this season, Barb’s a big part of Nancy’s story line and that drive to — I don’t know how to say it otherwise — to find justice. There are a lot of loose ends there that Nancy feels need to be addressed.”

Co-creator Ross Duffer also expressed the approach of exploring this aspect of the story:

“We wanted to show that’s something that Nancy didn’t really deal with last year.”

Co-creator Matt Duffer also addressed how Barb’s family factor into the story while also responding to some fans’ criticisms regarding her family’s reaction to her death:

“You met her mom briefly last year but we introduce her dad. The only thing that bothered me about the Barb criticism was people saying her parents didn’t care about her — of course they care. In their mind, Hopper has been slacking off and he’s a joke of a chief.”

Based off of these comments from Dyer and the Duffer Brothers, it looks like we will see Nancy dealing with her own survivor’s guilt when it comes to her still coping with the death of her best friend that she may or may not have been partially responsible for. For fans hoping that Barb gets the justice she deserves, we are just a little under a month away from finding out.

Stranger Things 2 stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, and Noah Schnapp. The series has also added Sean Astin (The Goonies), Paul Reiser (Aliens), Brett Gelman (Jobs), Dacre Montgomery (Power Rangers), Danish actress Linnea Berthelsen, and Broadway star Sadie Sink into the mix as well.
