The Duffer Brothers Tease The Shadow Monster In ‘Stranger Things 2’

Stranger Things 2 bannerThe Duffer Brothers have opened up, offering some spoiler-free insight into the giant Lovecraftian-like spider monster looming in the sky over Hawkins, Indiana in Stranger Things 2.

The next adventure continues one year later in the fall of 1984 with the characters set to deal with a much bigger threat than the Demogorgon from season one. Not only is the world itself is now turning upside down, but Will (Noah Schnapp) is still dealing with the consequences of his time spent in the upside down. In Entertainment Weekly’s latest cover story, Schnapp confirmed that the shadow realm is indeed changing him and we’ll learn how in the smash hit’s second season:

“It’s not like others have gone through this. No one has ever gone through this before. So [Will’s] confused, he’s scared, and he’s trying to cope with everything. You’ll learn in the second season how the Upside Down is affecting him and how it’s kind of changing him.”

Matt and Ross Duffer compared the new season’s big bad with the Demogorgon of last year, likening their approach to the petal faced monster to the shark in Steven Spielberg’s Jaws:

“Our big reference for [the demogorgon] season 1 was mostly Jaws,” Matt said. “It’s a shark and, the other dimension is the underwater. So there has to be something more sentient and that’s that big thing in the sky.”

While the new season will feature several different storylines, the series will maintian the propulsive, film-like narrative structure that season one had as each thread will ultimately connect to the shadow monster by the end of the second season.

“I think the difference is you don’t really see how it’s all tied together until later,” added Ross. “But it’s all connected to this singular threat which is tied into this shape that Will sees in the sky. Will is the way through which we’re able to understand what’s going on.”

Stranger Things 2 stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Finn Wolfhard, Millie Bobby Brown, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, Charlie Heaton, Joe Keery, and Noah Schnapp. The series has also added Sean Astin (The Goonies), Paul Reiser (Aliens), Brett Gelman (Jobs), Dacre Montgomery (Power Rangers), Danish actress Linnea Berthelsen, and Broadway star Sadie Sink into the mix as well. Here’s the official synopsis:

It’s 1984 and the citizens of Hawkins, Indiana are still reeling from the horrors of the Demogorgon and the secrets of Hawkins Lab. Will Byers has been rescued from the Upside Down but a bigger, sinister entity still threatens those who survived.

Stranger Things 2 hits Netflix October 27, 2017.
