Stranger Things creators Matt and Ross Duffer have confirmed the highly-anticipated sequel season, Stranger Things 2, will all build up to a climax with the characters facing what has been dubbed the “shadow monster”, the giant Lovecraftian-like spider monster seen looming in the sky over Hawkins, Indiana in the Super Bowl spot and the “Thriller” trailer.
The first season of the sci-fi horror adventure series focused on the vanishing of Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) and the efforts of his friends and family to uncover the truth about his mysterious disappearance and rescue him from the shadow realm known as the Upside Down. The second season — which premieres one month from today — has been teased as bigger and darker, and when the adventure continues one year later in the fall of 1984, the characters will find themselves up a much greater threat than the Demogorgon.
In Entertainment Weekly’s latest cover story, the cast and creators opened up about what fans can expect when Netflix’s smash hit returns. Finn Wolfhard, the young actor who plays Mike Wheeler, teased the sequel season as faster and more intense using an analogy between soda and energy drinks:
“It’s Stranger Things but just sorta hopped up a little. It’s almost like season 1 was drinking a Coke and season 2 they drank a Red Bull.”
The Duffer Brothers also confirmed that the new season will feature several different storylines but assured fans of the series’ propulsive, film-like narrative structure that each storyline will connect to the shadow monster which has been previously teased as the series’ ultimate big bad.
“It’s all connected to this singular threat, which is tied into this shape that Will sees in the sky,” said Ross. “Each episode is building on the last one. It gets much crazier than it ever got in season 1,” Matt added.
The cast is also featured on the cover of the latest issue of the magazine with three individual covers spotlighting the boys (Wolfhard, Schnapp, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin), Eleven (Millie Bobby Brown), as well as the adults including our first look at Sean Astin in the role of Bob Newby alongside Chief Hopper (David Harbour) and Joyce Byers (Winona Ryder). Here’s the official synopsis:
