‘Suicide Squad’ Passes $500 Million At Worldwide Box Office

Suicide_Squad_Rain_Team.0.0

Suicide Squad opened to mixed reviews from fans and critics but continues to impress at the box office. Squad has officially passed $500 million in just 13 days since its release. Squad has earned over $238 million domestically, with an additional $271 million being brought in from overseas markets.

The film will be opening in Germany this weekend and Japan on September 10th.

Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of Worldwide Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures, spoke out about the success of Squad.

“It is incredibly rewarding to see audiences around the world coming out in such a big way for ‘Suicide Squad.’  We have several major markets yet to open, and expect to continue seeing strong returns at the box office for the weeks to come.”

Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and Distribution, echoed that of Vandenberg and added that Squad is another great position this weekend around the world to impress at the box office.

“We’re thrilled with the huge numbers on ‘Suicide Squad,’ and to be coming out of an already highly successful summer with such a big win for our slate. The film is in position for another terrific weekend as our overseas expansion continues.”

It feels good to be bad…Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

Starring Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Karen Fukuhara, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood and Cara Delevingne, Suicide Squad is in theaters now!

aw man, now it’s going to be REALLY hard for me to crunch these numbers and try to spin this as a flop. Darn, darn, double darn!

    • SAMURAI36

      LMAO!!

    • Axxell

      Just take the critics’ response…

  • xxjinzaxx

Too bad China is still out of the question.

    • SAMURAI36

Man, if China would open their gates, this film would make at least $900M.

      • xxjinzaxx

        What is their reasoning? NSFW?

        • SAMURAI36

That, and the word is, Katana’s mask is a problem for them.

          • xxjinzaxx

*sighs* cultural sensibilities. sometimes ya gotta love em.

      • JMMagwood

        Agreed!

BTW, I really liked “SS.” Story could have been stronger, but I enjoyed most of the characters, especially HQ and J, and would love to see a movie devoted to them. For me, it’s no “BvS,” but I really thought it was a nice step forward DC Films, and has me really wanting to see where they will bring some of these characters back.

        • SAMURAI36

NICE!! I was wondering about your critique of the film. For the most part, I agree.

      • James Lail

Look its doing well but there is no chance it would ever hit anywhere near to 900 mm even with China. As it is it will hit 625mm +/- which is a nice number. The problem is much of the US/Canada audience is back at school this week and next. While in Europe the whole continent seems to go on vacation in August. They really needed to release this a week or more earlier.

      • Rob

China accounted for about $91 million of BvS total revenue. So there is no way China would put Suicide Squad in the $900 million range. Odds are this movie is going to cap out at $600-650 million. China might have pushed it over $700 million, but wouldn’t bet on it.

  • Marquis de Sade

Awwww, what a cute lil’ milestone. $500 million globally in 3 weeks. Lil’ sis still be tryin’ to wear big sister’s hand-me-downs.

    • Technofied

      Now please shut up.

And before you decide to post a stupid response, know that these numbers do not include the china market as the movie hasn’t been released there so i am sure the difference is enough to shove it up yours….

      Suicide Squad
      12-Day Total: $233,877,319

      Guardians Of The Galaxy
      12-Day Total: $188,469,200

      • SAMURAI36

        LOL!!

Definition of cognitive dissonance: when Marvel Zombies give a pass for the things they nitpick DC to death for.

        For instance:

        Exhibit A:

        GOTG makes $700M – “It’s a success!!”

SS makes $700M – “It barely breaks even!!”

        Exhibit B:

GOTG had a weak villain – “best story ever!!”

SS had a weak villain – “absolutely revolting!!”

        Exhibit C:

GOTG didn’t give backstory for lesser characters (Groot, Raccoon, Drax) – “great characterization!!”

SS didn’t give back story for lesser characters (Boomer, Slipknot) – “horrible writing, too much editing!!”

        • Rob

First Suicide Squad hasn’t made $700 million and odds are it won’t. The reason why GOTG made over $700 million is because the movie had unusually long legs. It made over $58 million AFTER Labor Day. That is unheard of.

Second, GOTG did give back stories for Groot, Racoon, and Drax. Suicide Squad gave a back story for Boomerang. They didn’t for Slipnot.

Third, GOTG did have a very weak villain, but that was the only glaring flaw of the movie. Suicide Squad was a mess with or without the villain and the third act was a trainwreck.

          • SAMURAI36

First Suicide Squad hasn’t made $700 million and odds are it won’t. The reason why GOTG made over $700 million is because the movie had unusually long legs. It made over $58 million AFTER Labor Day domestically. That is unheard of.

You are aware that SS is doing rather well in the theaters, yes? And that it still hasn’t opened up in all markets?

Second, GOTG did give back stories for Groot, Racoon, and Drax. Suicide Squad gave a back story for Boomerang. They didn’t for Slipnot.

GOTG had no back stories for those characters whatsoever. And Boomer didn’t either. For GOTG, Starlord and Gamorrah were the only ones that received a backstory. We know very little about the rest.

Third, GOTG did have a very weak villain, but that was the only glaring flaw of the movie. Suicide Squad was a mess with or without the villain and the third act was a trainwreck.

Actually, GOTG had all sorts of flaws, from start to finish. Such as the pointless intro of the Nova Corp, who were like glorified Mall Cops. Or how the “very weak villain” totally nerfed Thanos, who was supposed to be this “MEGA BIG BAD”, and then the villain himself got played like he was a total idiot.

Or how that entire jail scene made ZERO sense.

Or how this is supposed to be a children’s film, but they had no problem referring to the only female protagonist in the film (whose name is “Gamorrah”, of all things) a “green wh0re”.

Or several other plotholes that I won’t bother getting into here.

So all of this just furthers my point; if SS is a “mess”, then so was GOTG.

          • Rob

First, whether Suicide Squad is doing well in the theater is irrelevant to you saying it has made $700 million. My guess it will cap out at about $600 million or so. Good, not great. The foreign markets where Suicide Squad haven’t opened aren’t going to make that much of a difference. China is the biggest non-U.S. market by far and it only accounts for about 10-12% of a given movie’s revenue.

Second, every Guardian character had a backstory. Some are not nearly as detailed as others, but you can’t give detailed back stories to every character. Otherwise, do we slam Star Wars because Han Solo and Chewbacca had no backstory? We found out that Rocket was genetically engineered. We find out that Drax’s wife and child were killed by Ronan and he is seeking revenge. We found out Boomerang was a thief who would sell out his partners. Those are back stories.

Third, you are pointing to minor flaws which all films have. I am talking about major flaws like Suicide Squad had like the over the place tone of the movie and the weak third act. If you think GOTG had the same flaws as Suicide Squad had, you are really biased.

          • SAMURAI36

First, whether Suicide Squad is doing well in the theater is irrelevant to you saying it has made $700 million. My guess it will cap out at about $600 million or so. Good, not great.

Depends on the spin you accept. Even if it only tops out at $600M, that’s more than good, considering:

            1) These are mostly obscure characters, and a drastically different take on a major character

            2) DC doesn’t have the momentum in the theaters that Marvel has

            3) SS has been critically bashed.

The foreign markets where Suicide Squad haven’t opened aren’t going to make that much of a difference. China is the biggest non-U.S. market by far and it only accounts for about 10-12% of a given movie’s revenue.

$50-60M is a nice chunk of change. If the remaining markets do that combined, I’d say SS is in the runnings to make $700M, or at least close to it.

However, there’s always a portion of the story that continues to get untold. That’s the front end as well as the back end of these films.

On the front end, WB has made easily a half $B, on licensing for SS alone. They made likely twice that much for BVS. In fact, it’s likely that they funded all of BVS (budget + marketing), and probably most of SS with that licensing. Anything these films bring in from the box office is pocket money at that point.

On the back end, I’m sure you’re aware of the fact that practically anything with the DC logo sells like hot cakes in the home video market. BVS has been the top seller for a month straight. MOS made over $100M in DOMESTIC video sales alone. That’s not even counting worldwide sales.

For reference, AOU didn’t even do half that much. Neither did GOTG. SS will likely follow suit with the rest of the DCEU, and be huge on the home video market as well.

The point is, WB is lauhging all the way to the bank. And that’s because they realize that the box office isn’t the final buck (no pun) for them.

And let’s not mention the soundtrack, which is #1 on the charts right now.

But there’s yet another cognitive dissonance:

GOTG’s soundtrack: “The hottest I’ve ever heard!” (even though those songs are not only 30-35 years old, but most of them had been used before, in a DOZEN other movies over those years; how original :- )

SS’s soundtrack: “ill-placed, unbefitting of the subject matter, and a host of other disingenuous critiques” (translated: critics don’t like Rap music).

Second, every Guardian character had a backstory. Some are not nearly as detailed as others, but you can’t give detailed back stories to every character.

I actually agree. You’re preaching to the converted here. But the point is, the cognitive dissonance. People are holding the lack of back stories for certain characters in SS against that film, but are overlooking the very same for GOTG.

Otherwise, do we slam Star Wars because Han Solo and Chewbacca had no backstory?

I’m not the best person to use that example on. I’m not one that views SW as the holy grail. ALL of those films have huge plot holes and other problems in them.

We found out that Rocket was genetically engineered. We find out that Drax’s wife and child were killed by Ronan and he is seeking revenge. We found out Boomerang was a thief who would sell out his partners. Those are back stories.

Tell that to the critics who give SS a 26%, and cited this as their reasoning.

Third, you are pointing to minor flaws which all films have. I am talking about major flaws like Suicide Squad had like the over the place tone of the movie and the weak third act. If you think GOTG had the same flaws as Suicide Squad had, you are really biased.

Cognitive Dissonance #(what number are we on now? 5? I should numbered these things. But lets go with 5 for now)5:

Pointing out flaws in GOTG: “You’re just being biased and nitpicky”.

Pointing out flaws in SS: “You’re an objective critic, with legitimate concerns”.

So, SS was “all over the place”, even though GOTG consisted of a silly premise from the start. Nobody in the film displayed a single iota of competence; not the Mall Cops, not the villains (of various tiers), and certainly not the “heroes”. Everyone stumbled (or danced) into their predicaments, with little or no consequence.

LOL, “weak third act”. Never mind the fact that the villain was so easily defeated by an idiot dancing circles around him (literally), or the “heroes” saving the day by holding hands. Or the dumb aerial space ship grid that the Mall Cops formed in the sky, that served no purpose. And then the “heroes” rode off in a Star Trek-esque moment. I half-expected Starlord to give the “boldly go” speech, as he stared off into space.

But yeah, that was the third act to top all third acts. :-

          • SAMURAI36

            Cognitive Dissonance #7:

Major MCU villain was only in GOTG for a few minutes: “I can’t wait to see Thanos later in Infinity War!!”

Major DCEU villain was only in SS for a few minutes: “Man, they totally wasted the Joker!!”

          • Rob

The general consensus about Thanos in GOTG even by some of the biggest Marvel fans was that he was wasted and the CGI sucked. I don’t think people came out of that movie and said based on what we saw of Thanos that they cannot wait to see him in Infinity Wars. I think the general consensus was he was the worst part of that movie.

          • SAMURAI36

Where is that “general consensus”? I’ve yet to see it. It certainly didn’t manifest itself on this site, nor any others that I frequent.

In fact, I see just the opposite:

            http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/heat-vision/problem-bringing-thanos-guardians-galaxy-759333

            Especially in the comments sections.

        • Technofied

the comment section is full of ignorant and hypocrite people.

What they won’t have with one, they’ll settle for with the other.

+ These people are totally blinded to the fact that Suicide squad didn’t open in international markets a week earlier, in fact it didn’t open in the major markets until after it was released domestically. They took a week or, two to release it in some of the major international markets leaving china out of the question.

& This movie is not about a superhero taking on the henchmen of Thanos himself, these are dark and twisted characters taking on the bigger threat, not to mention this was not a team up but a group of people forced together.

SS Was not a movie about superheroes and it was a total wild card and it passed $500 within the first 15 days and that’s something given that it was critically bashed and given 26% at rotten unlike GOTG that received 91% of critic score which not to mention is the same as Shawshank Redemption (ROFLMFAO)

I mean can it even get more obvious than it already has? 😀

      • Rob

GOTG didn’t start showing in China until October which was about two months after the release in the U.S. So in the first twelve days of release, GOTG made $0 more than Suicide Squad has in China.

        • Technofied

Wow, aren’t you the awkward ignorant in the room. Suicide Squad hasn’t been released in China, at least not as of yet.

          • Rob

Moron! You were comparing the grosses from the movies 12 days in and stating Suicide Squad hasn’t grossed a single dime in China yet. I am pointing out that 12 days in, neither had Guardians of the Galaxy. GOTG was out in the U.S. for two months before it was released in China.

Before you call someone an awkward ignorant, you might not want to be an awkward ignorant yourself.

      • Rob

Comparing the two is difficult. Suicide Squad opened far stronger, but GOTG had an unusually long theater run. The movie made $58 million domestically after Labor Day. That is is unheard of.

        • Technofied

What you wouldn’t do to turn it around. Btw, i didn’t start the comparison. open up boxofficemojo and you’ll see the comparison right there and my coment was in response to Marquis De Sh** head, not yours

          • Rob

I am not turning it around at all. GOTG had unusual staying power. It didn’t open as big as Suicide Squad, but the weekly drop off was far less. It earned its money domestically because of the staying power of the movie.

So far Suicide Squad is not showing the same staying power. It is having far greater drop offs from week to week. But it started higher than GOTG. So it is more front loaded. Only time will tell if it can stay in the theaters in the U.S. and make money through October like GOTG did.

          • SAMURAI36

I’ve already explained the box office in an earlier post, to which I’m still awaiting your response.

        • Technofied

You ignorant pri**, at least it had a release date, SS got completely banned with no hopes of release AT ALL!!! and as far as your argument goes, it is as useless as you are. 23 days in and SS is still $40 millions ahead of GOTG which technically was 28 days in release at this point so regardless of the weekend drop, it didn’t seem to have that impact that would want.

SS made far more money out of their theatrical run than GOTG would have given a critic score of 26%, I would have loved to watch that happen.

btw, it already broke past $600M before it’s 4th weekend so you can have some ice :)

          • Rob

LOL! If I am ignorant, what does that say about you? Twenty three days in, GOTG still didn’t make a single dollar in China.

You keep on comparing both movies at a given time and point out Suicide Squad hasn’t made a single dollar in China even though neither had at this point in their release. And I pointed out that what GOTG had was incredibly strong legs that made it gross a ton of money domestically in September. We do not know if SS will do the same yet.

And I not one who said SS is a bust. All I did correct your first incorrect statement where you said that 12 days in SS made more than GOTG and if you took the money GOTG made in China over that time, the divide would be greater. Neither movie made any money in China 12 days in.

Rather than admitting you were wrong, you have gone into this stupid and circular rant just proving how dumb you are.

Yes, when you compare both movies after the end run, you should take out GOTG’s China number for a fair comparison, but even 28 days in, neither movie had made a dime in China.

    • Michael Heinrich

How does 13 days equal 3 weeks when there are 7 days in a week. Did you complete 1st grade?

      • SAMURAI36

You’re just now noticing that? Sade is the village idiot on here.

        • Michael Heinrich

I just drop in from time to time

        • Napi

I agree with you, he is the village idiota

        • JMMagwood

He used to be somewhat entertaining in a sort of pathetic way, but now, he’s just pathetic. It’s funny watching everyone dump on the four stooge haters, though.

      • JMMagwood

LOL I don’t really post here often anymore, but that was funny!

      • Marquis de Sade

Uhhh, it opened a week earlier overseas.

        • Johnny Risko

Hey Sad Markie! Your Mom’s basement called. It wants you to come vacuum up all the Cheetos crumbs and flip the cushions on the couch.

          • Marquis de Sade

I’ll get right on it after I return from my haircut appointment at the dentist office. They’re currently removing your mom’s pubic hair from my teeth…She’s definitely an epicurean delight!

        • Michael Heinrich

In 2 minor markets. Unlike most Blockbusters to make the milestone these days, the Squad has to do it without China, which makes it more impressive. It just opened in one major market and still hasn’t hit Japan. So I think 2 weeks is far more accurate.

          • Marquis de Sade

If it matches DEADPOOL’S numbers (who also didn’t make it to China), you’d have a valid argument, but lets’ be honest, you supercilious dc fangurl, s.s. will be lucky to make it pass $600 million…and considering its’ budget is 3 times+ that of Deadpool‘s, their paltry b.o. thus far is all the more less impressive…especially when you factor we’re in the tail-end of the Summer season where s.s. isn’t facing any real competition.

          • Michael Heinrich

You do realize week to week comparisons have it ahead of both Deadpool and GOTG right, and early March is more of a deadzone than early August. GOTG was released the exact same weekend. And you brought up China for GOTG which Suicide Squad is going to surpass without China. Your the miserable little fangirl troll for changing Comparison mid discussion, not that it matters because SS has slowed it’s fall and may make far more than you think

          • Marquis de Sade

Oh, you silly lil’ hormonal dceu fangurl, the probability of s.s. out-grossing GOTG (long-term) is next to nil! – Now go take some Midol and stop succumbing to these menstrual-induced fits of fancy.

          • Michael Heinrich

Keep calling me a girl I have a nice dose of Thundering Hammers or maybe a Gift of Destruction, Thrusting Salute for you. Keep attacking and I’ll forget I’m not currently committed.

          • Marquis de Sade

LOL! So in other words, you’re under the delusion that those voices you hear in your head are your friends, but in reality are just a friendly reminder to increase your daily dosage of lithium, huh?

          • Michael Heinrich

Actually lithium almost killed me. BTW S$ is over 600 million now. And they are not voices just out of control brain enzymes. Mix that with a good level of skill in Karate and the fact I really don’t give a s&?t what happens to me and Im not someone to piss off

          • SAMURAI36

Don’t ya love it when haters gotta hate, and b!tches gotta b!tch?

    • Michael Heinrich

My 8 year old son would like to know where you got your math?

  • Joshua Daniel Howell

Not out to be negative, as I actually enjoyed this film, but where are these numbers numbers coming from? BoxofficeMojo still has the film at $477,277,319

    • Technofied

boxofficemojo skucs for a site that is suppose to give us numbers. Their domestic box office doesn’t update until the day after tomorrow and the international boxoffice is even worse.

Always look for the collection date and you’ll know the difference.

      • Joshua Daniel Howell

Ok, so what site should I be using for Box Office Numbers? I’ve found that most movie articles with box office figures reflect the same data as Boxofficemojo. Is there a better site to use?
