The sequel to Marvel’s unconventional 2014 smash hit is fairly standalone by the studios’ standards. Gunn deliberately keeps his galactic Guardians separate from the Earthbound Avengers for a journey that is more Captain America: The Winter Soldier than Iron Man 2. To that end, not only do the original five Guardians return, but they’re joined by fellow returnees Nebula and Yondu as well as the empath Mantis. They’re also joined by Star-Lord’s long-lost father, who just so happens to be Ego the Living Planet, taking the form of Kurt Russell (given the choice, who among us would not choose Russell as our avatar?). Despite the inward focus, I still expect plenty of clues and Easter eggs for future Marvel films like Thor: Ragnarok and Avengers: Infinity War.
