Last week Supergirl fans were stunned to learn that the nefarious leader of Project Cadmus was also Lena Luthor’s mother, Lillian, prompting viewers to question whether or not Lena Luthor’s efforts to reform her family name were genuine. Actress Melissa Benoist spoke to TVLine about the difficult nature of Kara and Lena Luthor’s relationship in light of the revelation.
Benoist addressed whether or not Kara can trust Lena while praising actress Katie McGrath’s performance as the adoptive sister of Lex Luthor.
“I mean, should anyone ever trust a Luthor? That’s going to be the looming question. Lena and Kara have such an awesome relationship — I love the scenes with Katie McGrath, she is awesome and perfect in that part — but I don’t think Kara is ever going to be able to truly know if Lena is being honest, or if she shouldn’t be suspicious of her.”
Benoist added that despite the surprise reveal, Kara and Lena’s admiration for each other remains genuine.
“There is a true friendship there and a mutual respect.”

Now, in Season Two, Kara has left the safety of being Cat Grant’s assistant in order to figure out what she really wants to do, while as Supergirl she continues to work at the DEO., protecting the citizens of National City and searching for Jeremiah and Cadmus. Along the way, she will team up with Superman (Tyler Hoechlin) to battle new villains, as she strives to balance her personal life with her life as a superhero.
Supergirl airs on Monday at 8:00 pm ET on The CW.
