According to Deadline, Sylvian White has been set to direct the Screen Gems thriller adaptation of Slender Man. The film is set to begin production in the spring and will be different from the HBO documentary Beware the Slenderman series.
White has previously directed The Losers, and the Screen Gems production Stomp the Yard. Slender Man will revolve around the tall, thin figure with a featureless face who haunts and kidnaps children and teens. Various Slenderman properties have been developed since its inception as a creepy pasta including video games and other stories. While the video games rely primarily on jump scares, we can hope the film will provide a more tense and thrilling atmosphere.
While a lot of the hype on Slenderman seems to be dying down after the surge of video games, perhaps the HBO series and the Screen Gems film can revive the character.
The film was hatched as a multi-platform property. Screen Gems had acquired the rights from Mythology Entertainment, Madhouse Entertainment, and No Dream Entertainment. Bradley Fischer, James Vanderbilt, William Sherak, Robyn Meisinger, and Sarah Snow are all producing. Tracey Nyberg, Louis Sallerson, Adam Kolbrenner, and Ryan Cunningham are executive producing the film.
While no release date has been set, Slender Man will likely debut sometime in 2018.
