If you wondered what was up with those spaceships in the recent Ninja Turtles 2 trailer, you just may have your answer. In a recent article by Rolling Stone, a bit of dialogue between director Michael Bay and visual-effects supervisor Pablo Helman appears to confirm that Krang, a villain known quite well to fans of the old TMNT cartoons, will be appearing in Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows this summer. There are no details regarding his specific design or the look of his robot exo-suit (not to mention the possible existence of the tank-like Technodrome), but the article includes a moment at visual-effects company Industrial Light & Magic wherein Bay gives some notes on the character’s design. The article reads as follows:
They start with Ninja Turtles animation. Pablo Helman, a visual-effects supervisor who worked on the Star Wars prequels, appears onscreen and shows Bay the latest version of Krang, a new-to-the-movies villain who is, essentially, a disembodied brain inside a giant robot. “So we’ve eliminated the tentacles,” Helman explains. “Is it too monster-ish?”
“He could have some tentacles,” says Bay. “I just don’t want them coming out of the side. He looks like a stupid octopus.”
The article also discusses some of Bay’s critiques during the design process for Bebop and Rocksteady, two other villains who are going to be making their big-screen debut when Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows hits theaters on June 3 of this year.
