Tessa Thompson plays Valkyrie, the latest female hero of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the upcoming film, Thor: Ragnarok. Early reactions to the Taika Waititi-directed film praise Thompson’s Valkyrie as yet another great female character within the MCU.
Although Marvel has had some really great female heroes such as Black Widow, Gamora and Scarlet Witch, those characters were members of a larger team of mostly-male heroes. Although Marvel will finally bring a solo Captain Marvel film, they have a bit of work to do in regards to films led by female heroes – especially after the DC Extended Universe’s success with Wonder Woman.
Interestingly enough, Thompson along with women within Marvel have expressed to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige about a potential film prominently featuring the heroines of the MCU at the center. During a press conference for Thor: Ragnarok, Thompson expressed:
“Recently I marched up with a couple of other women who work in Marvel and [asked Kevin] ‘How about a movie with some female superheroes? Like all of them.'”
Feige had quite an interesting response on the matter:
“It was a pretty amazing moment to be somewhere and have your shoulder be taped and turn around find every female hero we have is standing there going, ‘How about it?’ And I said ‘yes.'”
How amazing would it be if the women of the MCU were brought together for a film centered on them? They already showcase their badass nature in their respective films, but to see them all unite would be incredible.
