Tough he’s been taking a backseat role (somewhat literally) in the MCU thus far, Thanos will be wreaking havoc on heroes in Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers 4 — creator Jim Starlin is like a proud father, especially after a set visit with his wife.
Starlin created the Mad Titan in 1973 and he and his wife Sonny recently had the chance to tour the set to see his creation come to life. Though he obviously avoided any spoilers, Starlin had nothing but great words to say about his experience and what to expect, in an interview with Comicbook.com.
“But what I can say is that absolutely everyone in the cast and crew went out of their way to make Sonny and I feel welcome,” Starlin said. “The biggest surprise was how open everyone was with us about what they were doing. I learned far more about the two movies than I was expecting.”
At this point, every fan must be asking “What. Did. You. Learn?” Though Starlin kept plot details under wraps, he did note the difference between the two upcoming Avengers films and each MCU installment prior.
“So because of that I want to tell all you Thanos fans out there, without giving anything away, you’re not going to be disappointed, far from it,” Starlin said. “I truly believe folks will be pleasantly shocked by how delightfully different these two movies will be from previous Marvel films.”
The difference Starlin could be referring to is the focus on a villain as opposed to the heroes — Marvel has been known for shifting all focus on its good guys, while the bad guys are tossed aside for the most part. Few villains, such as Loki, have been able to overcome that. It seems like Thanos will as well.
As a creator, allowing your work to be adapted by a different creative force could be tough. It could also cause some turmoil. For Starlin and the MCU team? It seems like perfect harmony as Starlin only had more positive things to say.
“Joe, Anthony, Chris, Stephen and the rest of the gang have my complete confidence in their ushering of our favorite Mad Titan out from the world of comics and into the Marvel cinematic universe,” Starlin said. “My first born leaves the nest to wreck havoc on the heavens. What more could a proud father hope for?”
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Pom Klementieff, Karen Gillan, Sean Gunn, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Holland, Sebastian Stan, Chadwick Boseman, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Benedict Wong, Tom Hiddleston, Tessa Thompson, Benicio Del Toro, Danai Gurira and Josh Brolin.
Avengers: Infinity War will be released in theaters on May 4, 2018.
