The Joker’s ‘Damaged’ Tattoo Is A Message To Batman

When the first images of Jared Leto as the Joker appeared from Suicide Squad, many fans immediately noticed the various tattoos that Leto was sporting. The main one being “Damaged,” which was written across Leto’s forehead.

During an interview with Empire Magazine, David Ayer explained the backstory behind that now famous tattoo and how it ties back into Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and the larger DCEU.

“This is sort of my personal thing and maybe less about a larger connection. But Joker killed Robin and Batman basically smashes his teeth out and locks him up in Arkham Asylum. It’s in the asylum where Joker would have done the ‘damaged’ tattoo as a message to Batman saying, ‘You’ve damaged me. I was so beautiful before and now you’ve destroyed my face.’ That’s where the grill comes from.”

Suicide Squad contained many easter eggs, including one that helped tied together the continuity of the DC Extended Universe, which was the fate of Jason Todd a.k.a. Robin, who was revealed to have been killed when Bruce Wayne walked passed the graffitied suit in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. During Harley Quinn’s introduction scene, there is a reference to her having a hand in Robin’s death.

It feels good to be bad…Assemble a team of the world’s most dangerous, incarcerated Super Villains, provide them with the most powerful arsenal at the government’s disposal, and send them off on a mission to defeat an enigmatic, insuperable entity. U.S. intelligence officer Amanda Waller has determined only a secretly convened group of disparate, despicable individuals with next to nothing to lose will do. However, once they realize they weren’t picked to succeed but chosen for their patent culpability when they inevitably fail, will the Suicide Squad resolve to die trying, or decide it’s every man for himself?

Starring Will Smith, Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, Viola Davis, Jai Courtney, Jay Hernandez, Karen Fukuhara, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Ike Barinholtz, Scott Eastwood and Cara Delevingne, Suicide Squad is in theaters now!

Weird, I thought all that kind of stuff came from drug dealers on instagram.

Ayer says the tattoos will be explained in the film, we ended up with two scenes where he plays around with the ‘mouth’ tattoo. What about the rest?

Even then I gotta admit what he explains here sounds pretty neat, if we only we could see it on screen.

I thought it meant he shopped at Hot Topic

But the movie hints that Harley took part in Robin’s death….but when we see those sessions, The Joker already has the teeth… I’m confused!!!

You see, they don’t actually pay attention to this stuff making sense so they just do whatever

I think the “Acomplice in the murder of robin” bit should just be dissregarded, it makes no sence becuas eof the timeline, and for the reason that you stated
