2016 is fast approaching and along with this brand new year expect to see many new Heroic Films hitting the theaters. 2016 is set to be a huge year with multiple franchises making their debut as well as their long awaited return to the big screen. I’m certain that this will be a huge year with lots of winners as well as some failures.  With this in mind we know that there are a lot of films being released this year, but we wanted to distill this huge list to the top five that we are really anticipating and looking forward to.  So here are our Top 5 Films That We Are Looking Forward to In 2016.

5. Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange is another entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The popular Marvel sorcerer character is finally making his debut into this Universe after being name dropped in Captain America The Winter Soldier.  This film sports an all star cast including Tilda Swinton, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and of course Benedict Cumberbatch in the titular role. Scott Derrickson is also directing the film. Derrickson is mainly known for his work in horror with films such as Sinister and The Exorcism of Emily Rose, so this film will certainly have a different feel than some of the other MCU films. Add that in addition to the introduction of the mystical side of the universe this film will explore a lot of new areas that we have not seen before.

4. Captain America: Civil War

Continuing in the massive successes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe we will be seeing Captain America and Iron Man face off as ideologies clash. The MCU’s adaptation of this popular comic event has changed many things including the fact that in this version the disagreement will be centered on Bucky Barnes who was re-introduced to us in 2014’s Captain America The Winter Soldier. Getting a chance to see many characters return and many characters like Spider-Man and Black Panther being introduced, it is no surprise as to why we are excited for this film.

3. Deadpool

Sporting one of the most comic accurate costumes to date with a very likable lead in Ryan Reynolds, Deadpool is looking to be one of the funniest Superhero films to date, if not the funniest. The Hard R rating sets the film apart as being unique within the genre and the marketing campaign has pulled out all the stops to give Deadpool the spotlight he deserves. Deadpool is one of the most popular Marvel characters and we have a suspicion that this film will please fans of the character and be a huge success.

2. Batman V. Superman: Dawn of Justice

One of the most highly anticipated films is certainly Batman V. Superman Dawn of Justice and we have to agree with the hype surrounding this film. This will be the first time that Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman have hit the big screen together. The film stars Henry Cavill, Ben Affleck, and Gal Gadot playing these iconic heroes as well as Amy Adams as Lois Lane and Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. The film has a lot riding on its success. Man of Steel opened the door to the DC Extended Universe, but this film is the lynch pin to the rest of the franchise being successful. We have a good feeling that this film will be an exciting event and we can’t wait until we get the chance to finally see it after several years of hype and buildup.

1. Star Wars: Rogue One

img 27

Needless to say that Star Wars is one of the biggest film franchises of all time. You can even take into account that Star Wars The Force Awakens is smashing box office records and has received widespread critical acclaim. This success ushers in the release of 2016’s Star Wars: Rogue One, which promises to tell a much different story. Set during the time before Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope it tells the stories of the Rebel spies that stole the plans for the Death Star. The film promises to deliver something unique to the franchise. A Star Wars film told without Jedi as any of the lead characters. Instead this is a war film that focuses on the struggle between the Rebels and the Empire, which personally sounds like an exciting approach to this universe.

With all of these films being released in 2016 the future of Heroic cinema seems bright. It will definitely keep bringing people back for more and keep them glued to their seats. All of these films have unique merits that will hopefully make each of them a real treat for movie fans.

With any Top 5 list, films that you may be excited for weren’t included so I encourage you to comment and tell us what your top 5 list would be.
