The ‘Weird Feeling’ That Led Daisy Ridley to Star in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’

Daisy Ridley, 23, scored one of the most coveted roles in Hollywood, starring as Rey in the highly anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens.  However, her road to Rey was not an easy one as she opens up to The Hollywood Reporter.

During her young acting career, Ridley faced plenty of rejection, yet an odd feeling – perhaps the force – convinced her to audition.

I had heard about the role quite a while before I auditioned, and I emailed my agent that I have this really weird feeling; I really feel like I need to audition. Then months went by and the same people were reading for it. But I still really had this feeling of needing to read for it. So I emailed my agent again for an audition. I had four or five auditions over seven months, and it was a very emotional time. My first few auditions really didn’t feel good, but my last audition suddenly felt like something clicked. You’re so desperate to get a role, but I felt like even if I didn’t get it, I did a good job, I’d done myself proud.

Something absolutely clicked during her audition process.  Ridley was welcomed into a brilliant cast of actors and a world of Star Wars secrecy, which Ridley claims “doesn’t feel difficult”.  What was difficult was her new protein-filled diet and attending three months of intensive training to achieve the physical appearance the character of Rey required.  However, Rey is much more than strength.

She faces a lot of challenges throughout the film, and the way she reacts to things I think is kind of the way anyone would. That’s why I think she’s so universal and brilliant: She’s frightened but she faces up to what she needs to. And she’s brave and smart, and you see an entire emotional spectrum of her throughout the film. She’s not a superhero. She’s a normal girl thrust into extraordinary circumstances, so it’s very relatable.

Only a couple more weeks until we find out what extraordinary circumstances Rey will be going through.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens hits theaters December 18th.
