Although the God of Thunder’s previous solo outings hasn’t shined as bright in comparison with his fellow Avengers, Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi doesn’t want 2011’s Thor and 2013’s Thor: The Dark World to feel like required viewing for moviegoers and instead something that anybody can jump right into.
In a recent interview with Screen Rant, the Thor: Ragnarok helmer explains that much like an author taking over the writing duties of a long-running comic book, he wants to make this film his “Thor 1” while respecting the groundwork laid out by previous Thor directors Kenneth Branagh and Alan Taylor:
“I think the main challenge, for me, was actually working at getting away from the other two films. And again… Yes, the other films are there, and it’s great to watch them. I think they’re good films. But I don’t mind if people start with this film. In my mind, for me, this is is my ‘Thor 1.’
I’ve seen the other films, and I respect them a lot. But I can’t spend too much time thinking about this as a threequel. Because then I’ll get tied up too much in respecting what went before, and respecting what’s going to come after. It just, for me, has to be a standalone thing. Because this could be the only time I do this. And I just want to make it a version of a Marvel film in the best way possible.”
With Thor: Ragnarok already looking to be one of this Fall’s most anticipated films, it’s looking more and more as though Waititi is going to be delivering on giving Thor fans a worthy interpretation of the God of Thunder.
Thor: Ragnarok collides on November 3, 2017 with a cast that includes Chris Hemsworth as Thor Odinson, Mark Ruffalo as Doctor Bruce Banner (The Hulk), Tesssa Thompson as Valkyrie, Sir Anthony Hopkins as Odin Borson, Idris Elba as Heimdall, Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Stephen Strange, Karl Urban as Skurge, Jeff Goldblum as En Dwi Gast (The Grandmaster), Tom Hiddleston as Loki Laufeyson, Cate Blanchett as Hela, and Clancy Brown as Sutur.
