Thor: Ragnarok will pit the titular hero against the Goddess of Death, Hela, in an epic struggle that could change the cosmic corner of the Marvel Cinematic Universe forever. Of course, while the film will be connected to the larger MCU story, it must also be able to stand as its own individual tale. In an interview with Collider, director Taika Waititi and producer Brad Winderbaum discussed the challenge of tying Thor: Ragnarok to the greater MCU story arc and ensuring it works as its own film.
Waititi stated that his role is to ensure the film works on its own:
“I don’t really want to make an episode of some other larger thing […] [My] job is just to make a film that can sit as a standalone piece… that if it’s the only Marvel film you see, it’s a great film with a great story in and of itself.”
The filmmaker added:
“The lucky thing is that there’s a bunch of geniuses who run Marvel that make sure, even if it’s a standalone piece, it’s still part of a great big jigsaw puzzle that could be appreciated as a whole as well.”
Describing Thor as a “lone gunslinger”, producer Brad Winderbaum explained what the God of Thunder has been up to since he was last seen in Avengers: Age of Ultron:
“What [Thor] realizes really fast is that this one quest, that universe ending peril that he was trying to figure out, branched off into any number of universe ending perils.”
Winderbaum also explained how the events of Thor: Ragnarok will change the MCU, likening the film to Captain America: The Winter Soldier:
“In Phase One, we established this cosmology that involved Asgard, Odin and certain ideas that you thought were eternal and could never change. [Thor: Ragnarok] breaks them down in a very similar way to how Winter Soldier broke down SHIELD.”

5 Reasons We’re Excited For ‘Thor: Ragnarok’
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is out on home media and Spider-Man: Homecoming has been playing in theaters for a while now, so it’s time to look forward to the next Marvel movies, the first being Thor: Ragnarok.
The trailer for the film is incredible. The vibe, the action, the set-design, the soundtrack, every element of the trailer screams, “This is a different kind of Thor movie.”
And that’s exactly what we need. Thor: The Dark World was the most easily forgettable Marvel sequel, only distinguishable from the original for its use of fan-favorite villain Loki. Thor: Ragnarok looks poised to switch up the formula, seeming more like a fun intergalactic romp than a brooding space epic.
Judging from the trailer and other positive buzz, there’s plenty of cause to be excited for Thor: Ragnarok. Here are the 5 reasons why. Click next to get started!
