‘Thor: Ragnarok’: Kevin Feige Talks Major Easter Egg

Thor: RagnarokMarvel’s Thor: Ragnarok opens in theaters very soon, and early reactions for Taika Waititi’s take on the God of Thunder have been very positive. Given all of the promotional material for the film, it looks like this entry within the Marvel Cinematic Universe is going to be riddled with Easter Eggs throughout.

One of the major Easter Eggs found within one of the trailers for Thor: Ragnarok involve statues of the heads of gladiator victors that are shown on the Grandmaster’s (Jeff Goldblum) palace in Sakaar.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige addressed that certain Easter Egg while promoting the film with Waititi:

“There might be some things in the trash piles. I mean, the biggest – the biggest Easter eggs are on the side of the Sakaran Palace – right, Taika? There are – there are previous Grandmaster champions that we see, as one for Hulk is being constructed, and those are all sort of Easter eggs for the deeper comic universe – that may or may not ever show up in the cinematic universe, but we thought it’d be fun to celebrate.”

Some of those heads in question are of Beta Ray Bill, Ares, Bi-Beast and Man-Thing. In particular, fans are quite excited to see the head of Beta Ray Bill as a statue in the film, hopefully hinting that the character will make an appearance in a future Thor film.

In regards to Marvel Easter Eggs, Waititi mentioned a particular favorite of his that can be found in the film:

“And in the trash pile, there is one Easter egg, an actual egg. If you were in – yeah, I mean, it’s – it’s one of the small ones – well, it’s one of the tiny little chocolate ones, and it’s the wide shot.”

That’s one of the greatest things about Waititi as a storyteller. His sense of humor is distinct not just through great joke delivery but also humor told on a visual level. This can be applied to both the actual films he creates as well as his persona promoting them.

What do you think about these Easter Eggs? Do you hope that the tease for Beta Ray Bill signifies that Marvel has plans to bring him into the picture for Thor to go up against in a fourth film? Also, with Feige’s confidence that Marvel will work with Waititi again in the future, how would the director bring that famous antagonist to life? Sound off in the comments below.

Thor: Ragnarok stars Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Mark Ruffalo, Tessa Thompson, Idris Elba, Karl Urban, and Jeff Goldblum.
