Last night during Marvel’s open house event, Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi revealed to the press that both Korg, a Kronan — an advanced race who developed space-travel technology and known adversary of Asgard — as well as the insectoid Miek would be appearing in the upcoming film.
Waititi confirmed Korg and Miek would be featured in the Planet Hulk storyline while he explained that the film would is borrowing elements from the Planet Hulk storyline in the Contest of Champions that Jeff Goldblum’s Grandmaster is running on the planet Sakaar:
“His name is Korg, like the piano, and he’s a Kronan! I mean, I know you’ve seen [Thor] Dark World. At the beginning of Dark World, there’s a Kronan there. This is kind of a relation to that guy. He’s not as tall. He’s sort of about eight feet tall, and he’s um, made of rocks. He’s one of the creatures featured in the Planet Hulk storyline along with another character called Miek who is also in the film, so we’re borrowing those from their storyline and putting them in the arena, the Contest of Champions, that the Grandmaster, Jeff Goldblum runs on the planet Sakaar, which the Hulk is the main champion.”
The director went on to add that Miek himself, a native to Sakaar, is a much more serious and efficient character than Korg is in the film:
“This other character here is Miek. He’s from the comics as well. He’s sort of like an insectoid. He sort of has a cool exoskeleton with knife hands. He’s basically sort of a larva shaped thing. He controls the exoskeleton with these controls and stuff. He’s way more graceful than Korg. Much more efficient and Miek does not talk.”
In addition to the reveal of Korg and Miek, the press was treated to their introductory scene in the film in which Thor is put into a jail cell on Sakaar with Korg and Miek. Following a humorous introduction from Korg, Thor asks how the two of them ended up in the cell to which Miek respond’s “I tried to start a revolution but I didn’t print enough pamphlets,” just before he tries to recruit Thor for his revolution.
Waititi also revealed that he assumed the motion capture responsibilities for Korg on the set and that he will be voicing the Kronan character as well.
The film stars Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Cate Blanchett, Tom Hiddleston, Tessa Thompson, Idris Elba, Karl Urban, Anthony Hopkins, and Jeff Goldblum.
Imprisoned on the other side of the universe, the mighty Thor (Chris Hemsworth) finds himself in a deadly gladiatorial contest that pits him against the Hulk (Mark Ruffalo), his former ally and fellow Avenger. Thor’s quest for survival leads him in a race against time to prevent the all-powerful Hela (Cate Blanchett) from destroying his home world and the Asgardian civilization.
