‘Thor: Ragnarok’ Director Taika Waititi Talks Playing Korg

Thor: RagnarokBased off of the trailers for Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok, director Taika Waititi is certainly leaving his own unique mark on an entry within the Marvel Cinematic Universe quite possibly more than any other director has in the past. Given his unique style as a filmmaker, Waititi brings an interesting perspective to the God of Thunder.

Not only does Waititi have the privilege of directing the third Thor film, he also has a role as an actor in the film as well. In Thor: Ragnarok, Waititi plays the character Korg. Waititi had previously had roles in his own films such as What We Do in the Shadows and Hunt for the Wilderpeople.

Recently, Waititi spoke with the Los Angeles Times about what it’s like acting in the film that he is simultaneously calling the shots for:

“You’ve got to understand that Taika Waititi the actor is an incredible person to work with. When Taika Waititi the director comes across someone like that, it just seems appropriate to give that actor a bit more time to show what they can do. I did that, and my theory was correct. I was, he was that good. As an actor, I highly valued Taika Waititi the director, who was very generous to me in giving me a few more takes than everyone else, and really let me show what I can do.”

Even in his interviews, Waititi’s sense of humor is infectious. If you have seen his previous films, his unique comedic style is going to stand out in ways other MCU films (including James Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy movies) never had before.

Waititi also talks about how the film does not take itself too seriously:

“If we were taking things a little too seriously, I would say, ‘Never forget that we’re making a cosmic adventure with a space Viking.’ That sort of captures it all.

We’ve got the Incredible Hulk, and a giant woman with antlers. We’ve got aliens and spaceships. It’s almost like a bunch of kids were asked what they wanted to put into a movie, and then we just did that.”

Also, for those who had the opportunity to see the exclusive footage at San Diego Comic-Con this year already had a glimpse at Waititi as Korg. In the scene shown, we see Thor meet Korg for the first time – to which hilarity ensues.

Here is the synopsis for Thor: Ragnarok.

In Marvel Studios’ “Thor: Ragnarok”, Thor is imprisoned on the other side of the universe without his mighty hammer and finds himself in a race against time to get back to Asgard to stop Ragnarok – the destruction of his homeworld and the end of Asgardian civilization – at the hands of an all-powerful new threat, the ruthless Hela. But first he must survive a deadly gladictorial contest that pits him against his former ally and fellow Avenger – the Incredible Hulk!

Directed by Taika Waititi and starring Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Idris Elba, Jeff Goldblum, Tessa Thompson, Karl Urban, Mark Ruffalo and Anthony Hopkins, Marvel’s Thor: Ragnarok opens in theaters on November 3, 2017.

Thor: RagnarokGuardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is out on home media and Spider-Man: Homecoming has been playing in theaters for a while now, so it’s time to look forward to the next Marvel movies, the first being Thor: Ragnarok.

The trailer for the film is incredible. The vibe, the action, the set-design, the soundtrack, every element of the trailer screams, “This is a different kind of Thor movie.”

And that’s exactly what we need. Thor: The Dark World was the most easily forgettable Marvel sequel, only distinguishable from the original for its use of fan-favorite villain Loki. Thor: Ragnarok looks poised to switch up the formula, seeming more like a fun intergalactic romp than a brooding space epic.

Judging from the trailer and other positive buzz, there’s plenty of cause to be excited for Thor: Ragnarok. Here are the 5 reasons why. Click next to get started!
