Tom Hiddleston, who plays villain Loki in the MCU is surprised that he’s still playing the Asgardian trickster in the forthcoming Thor: Ragnarok. Loki is one of the few villains in the MCU who has developed a sense of longevity and a pretty large fan base, so it makes sense to bring him back for more films.
The MCU is often noted for its mediocre and one-note villains but Loki has always been the exception, largely thanks to the writing that surrounds his character and Hiddleston’s acting chops. When speaking with Times of India, Hiddleston expressed that he’s surprised he’s been playing the character for so long:
“Every time I play Loki, the challenge is to find new ways of playing him, it is a source of constant surprise to me that I’m still here. I never expected that when I started playing him. I feel a huge responsibility to deliver the character people know, even though it’s been four years since I last played him, and also to try to take him in new directions.”
Hiddleston last played Loki in 2013’s Thor: The Dark World.
“I’ve spent six or seven years of my life trying to get to the bottom of what exactly it is that he wants. When he seems to get close to what he wants-power, acceptance, belonging-he changes direction. I think that is the thing that keeps him interesting in a way. He’s cunning and transformative and changeable, and will do everything he can to survive. He’s the trickster. He’s the God of mischief.”
Loki’s thought process and ambitions have constantly evolved as the MCU has progressed. It’s hard to tell what he’ll want in Thor: Ragnarok, but it’ll hopefully segue into his character arc for Avengers: Infinity War.
“When I put on the costume, the make-up and wig for the first time for this film and looked in the mirror, I thought to myself, ‘Wow, there he is.’ It was like seeing an old friend. It was good to see him, in a way. I feel like I know him.”
Hiddleston has been playing Loki for six years, and his role arguably led to his overnight success.
