Tim Curry Explains Why Mark Hamill Replaced Him As The Joker

Joker Lakeith StanfieldWe all know and love Mark Hamill’s sinisterly iconic vocal performance as the Joker. His unhinged portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime has defined the character for a generation, but at one point it was almost not meant to be.

Actor Tim Curry was originally tapped to voice the iconic Batman villain in the animated series but was replaced with Hamill for an undisclosed reason. Now, it looks like we finally have an answer.

ScreenGeek caught up with Curry at the Canada’s Fan Expo after his panel and noted that at the time of its production there was very little news on his involvement with Batman: The Animated Series playing the Joker. Curry responded:

“I did play Joker for a while, but I had bronchitis and they fired me – and hired Mark Hamill. That’s life.”

Tim Curry, of course, went on to have an illustrious career, but it does always make you wonder what Batman history might look like today if Curry had not gotten sick. Perhaps we might have lost out on one of the greatest Joker performances of all-time in Mark Hamill, or perhaps Curry would have provided us with an equally chilling incarnation.

The Joker Harley QuinnThe Joker is one of the most popular villains in fiction. As a result of that, he has been featured in multiple movies, TV shows and video games. Fortunately, he’s a character who can be molded to fit his environment. He’s equally at home in The LEGO Batman Movie getting his feelings hurt as he is pushing Superman to the brink in the Injustice video game franchise.

One question persists through all those adaptations: who plays Joker best?

For all you Suicide Squad fans out there wondering why Jared Leto isn’t on the list, don’t worry I got an answer for you. I didn’t like him! Man oh man, I thought he was terrible honestly. Laughable in the wrong sense of the word. Perhaps some of the cut scenes might have changed my mind, but from what I saw I wasn’t left wanting more.

Do you think I’m wrong? Should Leto or someone else have made the list? Sound off in the comment section and let me know!

But for now, take some laughing gas and hit Next to find out who the best Jokers are!

To be fair, Tim Curry already had “an illustrious career” before he lost the Batman gig.
