Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick has soared to the $1 billion mark at the global box office.

Top Gun: Maverick continues to break through more box office milestones. Recently, the Tom Cruise sequel crossed the $500 million mark domestically, easily surpassing Marvel Studios’ Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness as the domestic champion of 2022, but now it has also surpassed it globally thanks to its latest milestone: the coveted $1 billion mark.

Domestic numbers for Top Gun: Maverick are currently at $521 million, along with an international total of $484.7 million, bringing the Tom Cruise film to roughly $1.006 billion worldwide. This is the first film of 2022 to hit this box office milestone, and also the first since Spider-Man: No Way Home to do so.

A new Tom Cruise milestone.

In what may be the most surprising tidbit of them all is the fact that this film is officially the first Tom Cruise movie to cross the $1 billion mark. Given the actor’s worldwide fame as one of the last remaining marquee movie stars, it’s a bit surprising that he has yet to star in a $1 billion movie until now. On one hand, it’s a legacy sequel to an iconic 1986, but at the same time, the film’s legs at the box office are an indicator over its enthusiastic word-of-mouth.

Here is the synopsis for Top Gun: Maverick:

After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of Top Gun graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.” Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.

Directed by Joseph Kosinski from a script written by Ehren Kruger, Eric Warren Singer, and Christopher McQuarrie, based on a story by Peter Craig and Justin Marks, Top Gun: Maverick stars Tom Cruise, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and Ed Harris.
