Tom Hardy is playing coy about his rumored involvement in the next Star Wars film, Rian Johnson’s untitled Episode VIII.
(Possible light spoilers for Star Wars: Episode VIII to follow. Don’t read if you want to stay completely in the dark)
A while back came word Hardy would cameo as a random stormtrooper in the next sequel, and idea which would sound far-fetched had James Bond himself Daniel Craig not done the same thing in a memorable scene with Daisy Ridley’s Rey in Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter to promote the FX miniseries Taboo, which he stars in and produces based on an idea of his and his father Chips, Hardy playfully evaded the question of his possible role, without denying it.
Here is the exchange.
Final question: Rumor has it you’re going to be a Stormtrooper in the next Star Wars movie. True?
I don’t know if I can even say that. Where did you hear that?
Ah, the internet is a glorious web of deceit and misinformation, isn’t it? (Laughs.)
So that’s misinformation?
It could be, couldn’t it?

Taboo premieres the first of its eight episodes this Tuesday, January 10 at 10 p.m. on FX. Star Wars: Episode VIII hits theaters December 15, 2017.
