It’s been a while since Tom Welling has been on primetime television. Six years ago was the series finale of Smallville, but now TV’s former Clark Kent is returning — this fall on Fox’s Lucifer.
The more seasoned Welling will be playing a police lieutenant named Marcus Pierce, who will also be a love interest for Lauren German’s character Decker. Lucifer (Tom Ellis) isn’t exactly happy about that, and fans of Welling may not be happy about his comments on a potential return to Clark Kent.
Here’s what Welling had to say in an interview with EW:
“I definitely didn’t want to play Clark Kent again,” Welling said. “The great thing about Clark is he didn’t know who he was and he didn’t know what he was supposed to do with what he had and his abilities. This character very much knows what he’s capable of and knows what he wants to do and knows how to do it, so as much fun as that is to play, it wasn’t necessarily because of Clark that I chose this character. It was so many more factors than just, ‘I don’t want play Clark again,’ but I’d be lying if I was saying that I do not enjoy playing something very different for sure.”
With two different actors playing Superman already — one on TV with Tyler Hoechlin and then in the DCEU with Henry Cavill — having Welling return to the role any time in the near future might have been odd anyway. Perhaps fans would have wanted to see him on a different version of Earth on TV or even as a cameo. The latter is still possible, but it doesn’t seem likely based on his comments.
What do you think? Would you have wanted Welling to return to the role of Clark Kent? Would a cameo as a different character be a fun way for him to come back? Sound off in the comments below!
Lucifer comes back to Fox on Oct. 2 at 8 p.m. ET.
