Top 10 Moments From ‘Rogue One: A Star Wars Story’ Official Trailer

Back in April, fans got a first look at the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. Now a brand new trailer has arrived. This trailer gives fans a better look at new characters, multiple landscapes and that this film is going to be like no Star Wars film before it. Gareth Edwards lives up to his statement with this trailer, Rogue One is going to be a “war film.”

We’re breaking down the top ten moments from the trailer, including one major surprise.

10. “The World Is Coming Undone”

The opening lines of the official Rogue One trailer are said by Saw Gerrera (Forest Whitaker), “The world is coming undone.” This once again establishes the timeline in which Rogue One will be taking place, right before A New Hope. A group of Rebel fighters is tasked with the mission to steal the plans for the Death Star.

A reluctant Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) meets Gerrera in this scene. This name, Saw Gerrera, is familiar to those who were fans of The Clone Wars animated series. Gerrera is a freedom fighter, with help from his sister he employed some radical tactics to rid his home-planet of the Separatist army.

From this opening scene, the tone and feel of Rogue One are completely different compared to The Force Awakens. Director Gareth Edwards has put his touch on a galaxy far far away.

9. Chirrut Îmwe/Donnie Yen

Donnie Yen has a long resume when it comes to working in the film industry. He is known for his martial art skills and incredible fight and action choreography. This trailer gives us a much better look at Chirrut Îmwe (Yen) and his intense fight scenes.

Imwe also has one of the best lines in the trailer, “I fear nothing. All is as the Force wills it.”

8. Captain Cassian Andor/Diego Luna

Diego Luna’s Captain Cassian Andor is explored more throughout this trailer. Captain Andor recruits Erso for this mission.  It appears that he and Jyn Erso will be teaming up in order to take down the Empire and the Death Star. Luna seems like he is bringing a more grounded performance to this larger scale war film and will be bringing a lot of emotion to his character.

7. “A New Hope”

This trailer is stunningly shot and combines classic Star Wars music with amazing landscapes we have never seen before. It feels grand and familiar at the same time. This trailer feels like A New Hope with the modern energy and excitement that was brought to life by Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

6. K-2SO

Star Wars fans are used to droids being an integral part of the universe and in this trailer, audiences are introduced to K-2S0 (voiced by Alan Tudyk). K-2SO towers over Jyn Erso and brings some light-hearted humor to the trailer with a call back to the famous, “Never tell me the odds!” Rogue One is going to feature new characters and hopefully, another droid that can win our hearts like BB-8 did in The Force Awakens.

5. AT-ATs

Throughout the trailer, there are threads and tie-ins calling back to the original Star Wars films. One of the best callbacks and a complete “stand up and cheer moment” was seeing an AT-AT take a direct hit from Jiang Wen’s Baze Malbus. In this instance, man > machine.

4. War Film

Rogue One director Gareth Edwards has been very open about the fact that this is going to be a war film. This isn’t going to be a typical Star Wars film and that is scene during the back end of the trailer. The action has been accelerated and taken to new levels. These battle scenes feel emotional, gritty and powerful. These few scenes set the entire tone for the film.

3. Director Orson Krennic/Ben Mendelsohn

While most of this trailer focuses on the Alliance trying to restore balance to the galaxy, the villains have a few moments that are unforgettable. Ben Mendelsohn is seen once again as Director Orson Krennic. In his introductory scene, we see Director Krennic being surrounded by Deathtroopers and a planet can be seen in the foreground. Instantly calling back to mind the destruction of Alderaan.

2. “Are You With Me?”
Jyn Erso/Felicity Jones is front and center throughout this entire trailer. We see more of her backstory and how she came to be working with the Alliance on this mission. Her relationship with Diego Luna’s Captain Cassian Andor starts to develop and by the end of this trailer, Erso emerges as a confident leader, heading into battle. Once again, Star Wars is embracing a strong female character and putting her front and center.

1. Vader

It was one moment. One breath. Darth Vader finally appeared in Rogue One. Simply put…this was Rogue One dropping the mic.
