10. Alien: Covenant (“Take Me Home” TV Spot)
Alien: Covenant is probably my first or second most anticipated movie coming out this summer but, I gotta call a spade a spade, the marketing has been a bit too liberal with its reveals. The first trailer back in December basically spoiled most of the main cast’s fates. I get why they did that: they were trying to make clear they learned from Prometheus and this was an Alien movie through-and-through. It hasn’t been all bad, as just yesterday another cool marketing exclusive hit the web in the form of The Crossing, a Covenant prologue that bridges the gap between it and Prometheus by showing what happened to the latter’s survivors Shaw (Noomi Rapace) and David (Michael Fassbender) after that movie’s ending. But for my money the best piece of marketing for the film itself (The Crossing isn’t a part of the film proper) is the TV spot set to “Take Me Home, Country Roads” by John Denver. The effective musical contrast is heightened by the eerie record skips and distortions. And, addressing my first complaint, it reveals just enough to intrigue but not enough to guess out the whole plot.
